Cancelling BT Broadband question

I took on a tenancy at a house in December and had BT broadband installed, signing up for an 18 month contract. Unfortunately as I work on a contract basis I have now taken a job in another part of the country so need to leave the property. I am in negotiation with the Landlord regarding an early termination so need to have the BT line disconnected from the property.

When I take up the new job I will see how it goes, probably staying in hotels to begin with before committing to a rental property. I therefore spoke with BT today advising them that I will wish to have the line disconnected but happy to continue paying my monthly charge until I can transfer the line to a new property.

They must employ the rudest and most obnoxious staff, but the bottom line is they are saying that when I disconnect I have to pay for the remainder of the 18 month contract there and then. And when I move into a new property take out a new contract, so effectively paying them twice for the same period, and if my work contract is another short one then the same happens when I move on again. My belief was that the contract is with me and is not based solely on the property that the services are provided to.

Has anyone else come across this "policy" or can advise how I get around it.

Bottom line is that I of course won't use BT again, so they are cutting off their nose to spite their face.

you are terminating the contract as you are not moving to another address

afraid the charges are fair and explained in the original contract , the outstanding months payments PLUS a £25 service cease charge

But I will be moving into another property during the term of the contract, and am happy to pay the bill on a monthly basis for the full 18 months and re-connecting when I have a new address for which I would expect to pay a connection charge.

No ISP willl let you do that, nothing unusual about BT in that respect. You are terminating the contract when you have the line disconnected.
