Tablemats and the flipping cost of them!

I need new tablesmats for my nice new table. They have to be good quality, this time around I'm not looking for a cheap 'that'll do' set, I want nice ones. :D

So...help me. Some peeps have recommended material ones, some peeps say those are decorative but useless against hot plates etc. I've only ever had cheap cork things from Argos before so I'm not exactly a placemat connoisseur.

What do you lot use? Are you happy with them or would you not buy the same type again?

Are the more expensive ones better quality or is the higher cost more for design?

  • I have some from Ikea that cost under £2 each. They are a kind of woven fabric, washable, nice bright colours, work fine with hot plates and pans on them. Can't remember the Ikea product name for them but I daresay they are on the site. I didn't intentionally buy cheap ones, the colours just went with the colours in my dining room at the time. I'm happy with them, and would buy again.

I bought cheap ones in Dunelms last year - and had to bin them well before the year was out. I've now got a set from John Lewis which weren't cheap, but certainly are quality! I think you certainly do get what you pay for (unless you're lucky enough to get a decent set in the sales of course).

I got some glass ones cheap in Pound Stretcher. I found they are best with bairns as all the dropped food just wipes off!
Here I go again on my own....
  • I have Crazy Daisy placemats by Pimpernel, they were expensive but they will last forever. My last set were Pimpernel also, I only replaced them as I have had my kitchen diner completely remodelled and the pictures of wild animals on the placemats didnt fit in. I now use them outside during the summer.

I got my new ones here

In terms of mats for the table for things that have come out of the oven, I would say keep your cork mats for them, or get a nice metal one with a cloth underneath it, or layer several glass worktop savers on top.

In terms of placemats I would not suggest the material ones. I find I wipe down my placemats every day, so the very thought of having to wash a material one daily would drive me mad.

So I would say go for a board placemat. Glass for placemats I am not so sure as they make such a loud noice when anything is moved or placed on it. The board mats with the cork/material backing helps cut out the sound of banging on the table.

There are so many designs out there John Lewis do lots to choose from. I love the red flower, apples, dots and the spotty ones

i got some plain cream tesco value cork backed ones. they were £2 for 4 mat's so i got 3 sets. ideal for meals with the kids day to day use . but for weekend use or for our romantic 2 of us meals i have a nice set of faux leather ones in a teal colour. i got them in the sale about 2 years ago. instead of £12 for 4 they were £3, so i bought 3 sets as we often have 8 or 9 for a meal. plus leaves enough to go in middle of table for serving bowls etc. they are really nice.
