On a positive note I just wanted to say you are doing so brilliantly to have the money saved to pay for everything..you should give yourself a pat on the back for that instead of kicking yourself, that in itself is a great acheivement hun :T Keep at it it WILL get better :grouphug:

ok, someone somewhere is having a laugh!, have been smelling ' smell' today and at first thought it was youngest ankle biter (she's good at producing noxious smells in her nappy) but no its the drain that ends in my garden (nothing to do with my house at all) I have other peoples poop flaoting around on my lawn!, this has happened before but the council has always cleared the drain as i am not responsible, however they have returned the contract to severn trent (have just called them) and they reckon I'm going to have to pay! please tell me this isn't so!, the houses are very old and the drains have nothing to do with me!, they can't make me pay can they?. someone is going to call bak in the next 6 hours ,meanwhile me and the kids are holding cloths soaked in stardrops to cover the smell! cos believe me it stinks! what have the neighbours been eating!

Sorry to hear about your awful day! (((hugs)))

If this has happened before and you have not needed to pay, I can't see why you should this time! You might be able to get some advice from your Citizens Advice Bureau about who is responsible for the drains, I know ours have been very helpful about similar things in the past. That doesn't help in the short term I know but if I were you I'd really try not to be forced into paying until you've done a bit of research. I hope the smell goes soon! :)

Sorry your having such a bad time! Re the problem with the drains, might come down to whether or not the problem is before or after your drain joins the common drain. Like your home, the drains in my street seem to run down the back gardens (so to speak). Luckily I stay at the top of the hill and it starts at my house and works its way down. There is a problem further down the street though with a neighbour who keeps flushing strange things down her toilet and her kids stuff weird stuff down drains. However, back to the question at hand - if the problems is in the link into the main drain, householder pays, if it is in the main drain then they don't seem to have to.

Even if it is deemed as your responsibility, would it not be covered by your building insurance?
  • hi ,
severn trent have been and I am not liable for a charge (didn't think so) the drain in question has a storm cover in my garden but the drains are for the street leading away from my house if that makes sense my drains aren't connected to it at all,(my drains run in the opposite direction.
point worth knowing though if your house is pre 1935 (which mine is) apparetnly drains are responsibilty of council / water companies as drains will be as old as house ie probably knackered!. worth looking into if you have drainage probs like we had. house smells much nicer now!
    thanks all

  • Big hug to the kidsmum, sure everything will get better just like everyone else said in this thread. Accident does come along, at the most unexpected time, me and my OH went into town last weekend, and parked the car where we usually parked, 2 hours later we went back and somebody scarched the car!! using a key or ring or something really sharp, the mark is deep and the garage has quoted more than 500pounds to get the panel done!

I don't know what am I gonna do, on one hand I hated the scarch, on the other hand I really can't afford that much for it to be done..........guess I will have to live with it for sometime....hate the people did this

Oh no I've had the drain thing happen before, mid summer and mine is the end ina huge row of drains. I ended up paying someone privately to do it as the council left it way too long. Kids couldn't play out and has cost us a fortune to redo the garden as all the bark chippings and sheeting under it was ruined. Hope you get it sorted soon.
One day I might be more organised...........
