Hey guys

I just had such a interesting eye opening call with Natwest,
Wonder if you guys have had something like this
basically my minimum payment for December was £28.00 so i used my initiative and before the bill came out on the 5th i contacted them and made a payment for £50.00 and on the 6th made a further cash payment of £50.00 so i thought ok job done for that payment.

To my delight this morning got a bill come through saying i am having Late Payment fee's for December and also i need to pay £56.80 (2 minimum month payments) this took me back over my limit due to interest too so i thought they made a silly mistake decided to ring them.

To my joy the rude lady said that because i paid before the 6th of December i doesn't actually go towards my bill just reduces my balance. I simply said "hold on, i paid in December for December i used my Initiative and i get punished with a late fee how does that work?". She did say " i can wipe these charges if you make a further minimum payment for december".

I'm sorry but that doesn't make any sense? why should i have to make a further payment for something i have already paid 4 times than i should of that is ludicrous.

So i simply after 15 mins of going round and round in circles with her explaining i made the payments. She started raising her voice to me getting rude and impatient so i reminded her about customer Rapport and i want to discuss this with her supervisor name suzanna.

Well in my days of working in a call centre she has to be the rudest manager ive heard she kepts speaking over me when i was talking raising her voice telling me to let her speak and then she dragged the whole T's & C's Clause into the conversation so i have taken her name down i simply reminded her to keep her cool e.t.c and she ended the call in a right huff.

Where can i go from here about that ludicrous rule? they are demanding i pay another £28.00 to Decembers bill ASAP or collections will get involved

Any help?

A common issue. You need to make a monthly payment after the statement is generated and before the due date. You can't make up your own rules and pay future months in advance. So I would say they're right.

As above really. Statements can be produced on different days each month, mine for my Zero card is usually around the 25th of the month, although it can be earlier or later depending on whether it falls on a weekend or bank holiday, so I always wait until a few days after the 25th when I know the statement will have been produced so I can make my payment. I normally use the telephone service as my postal statement takes forever to come out (and have no online access!). Making a payment before your statement is produced will be credited to the previous month, so its really your responsibility to make sure you are making the payment for the right period, and not just assume you are.

IMO, I think Natwest were quite reasonable offering to wipe the charges if made the minimum payment.

Have to agree with the above 2, all credit cards basically work the same you have basically paid twice for the month before and nothing for your December statement.

I'd take the offer and make the payment and get rid of the charges, that is a generous offer.

The thing is you might say I'll cancel my card and go elsewhere, but if you do the same elsewhere you'll be in the same boat.

Sometime in life we have to accept we have made a mistake and this is one occasion in your life.

What is your complaint for? YOU didn't read the terms and conditions that you signed up for which will have said that you need to make payments in accordance with the information on your statement.

It's YOUR fault - no-one else is to blame. You should just phone up Natwest, apologise for not paying attention to your T&Cs AND your statements and accept their offer of the refund of charges when you bring your payments up to date.

Complaining when you're so blatantly in the wrong will just waste time and money.

You also made an agreement, when you were accepted for the card, to pay within the due period. You didn't.

You are in the wrong. Not deliberately, but that it the fact. To get fees refunded I suggest a polite grovel and a direct request for sympathy from the card company.

    The FSA? Why?

As for any other consumer body, they will tell you what you are being told here. The card company are complying with the T&Cs. You're not.

I would take the offer of making the payments to keep them straight, the take the matter up separately. If you stick to your guns now, your credit history will get worse and worse whilst Natwest continue to report breaches of the terms to credit reference agencies.

You said that you made a cash payment on the 6th. Was that before or after the date that the statement was dated?
If statement was dated the 5th then payment should have been treated as next month's payment.

Also, I would never advise being so close to the limit that a late payment charge puts you over it (easy to say but not always easy to do).

The statement is dated from the 6th so they have no grounds to stand on

Why have they no grounds to stand on? When they came to produce your statement, they noted a payment had been made that same day and it got included as a payment against the previous month's statement.

Did you actually read your statement before you made the payment?
