Is there no way that your friends husband could increase his working hours ?
Even if he managed to work one more hour then the family may qualify for working tax credits and child tax credits.
To be eligible to claim tax credits he must work a minimum of 16 hours per week.
Do you think this may be possible ?The loopy one has gone :j0 -

Maybe finding another 15 hours per week isnt possible at the minute for one reason or another , i did however suggest finding even one more hour as then they would qualify for tax credits . One hour shouldnt be that hard to find. The loopy one has gone :j0 -

Unless one of them is on parental or paternity leave, a carer or a refugee learning English they wouldn't fulfill the criteria for Income Support.
He could claim JSA, but not if he is self employed and not actively available for and seeking employment.
SMI cannot be claimed until a person has satisfied the eligibility for income based benefit for at least 13 weeks.0 -
OP - you say the Husband works 40 hours normally , but business has died down . This is totally understandable.
He already has 15 hours so my advice would be to pull that extra hour up from some where every week !!
Tell him to spend an extra hour doing his accounts or anything related to his business in any way.
When he has the required 16 hours the family can then apply for tax credits which should help them through this quiet period.
Good luck , i hope they get sorted .The loopy one has gone :j0 -

Op , it seems to me from your posts that your "friend" doesnt actually want to increase their hours in order to get tax credits ?
It appears that your "friend" doesnt actually want to work to earn extra money ?
It looks like your "friend" wants to work as little hours as they possibly can whilst the government helps them pay for their mortgage !!!!
It doesnt work this way though !
Oldernotwiser is spot on in what she said.....i had sympathy for your situation . I offered you sound advice on what you could do but then you have to go and bring "refugees" into the conversation....
Your on your own now because im out !The loopy one has gone :j0
