How did my dog get fleas and worms?
Comments

A cough is a sign of worms and usually a bad case ,a dog can get worms from the fleas ,so a trip to the vet is needed to sort it out ,my dogs are wormed every three to six months and I find the cheaper supermarket brands are not as effective in treating the problem .0

I actually gave Orbit (rip) fleas!!
I was working as a Service Tech for NTL at the time & one home I was in was particulary scummy!! Their dog ate from a mouldy food crusted sweety tin,the was roach butts all around the electric fire & a half stripped motorbike in the living room.In my 12 years as a Telecooms Engineer,it was by far the worse home I have ever been in.
Anyway, after fixing the fault,I left & almost immediately started itching,I could see the fleas on my clothes so I called my boss who allowed me to go home & change,I took my uniform off in the hallway to my apartments & binned it.Also had to get my van fumigated!
Reminds me of when my OH was an estate agent. He had to go into a house that had been empty for a while and they all jumped on him for a feed.
He phoned ahead and I ran a bath for him and despite the fact that we lived on a main road he left his clothes outside the front door and ran to the bathroom in all his naked glory.
A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.0 -
My dog has nothing to do with any other animals- he's a bit aggressive towards them (he's a terrier) so I keep him on a lead and away from other dogs at all times.
Just a thought that's slightly off-topic. By keeping him away from other dogs you will compound the aggression problem, so for a long term solution it might be an idea to try to socialise him within the confines of a training class. It's so hard to keep your dog on the lead all the time with your eyes everywhere for other dogs, far better to address the problem head-on and try to solve it.0 -
Most dogs are born with worms (Toxocara canis) which they get through their mothers milk and through the placenta as well. This is the common roundworm an can cause blindness and otter diseases in humans (so this one is the main reason to pick up your dogs poo in public places). As dogs get older, their immune system develops better immune responses against Toxocara so they encyst completely harmlessly in the lining of the intestine. Every so often they pop out and have a wee resurgence so you might see them.
Fleas can last for ages as people have said above in dormant properties so that's prob where they came from. The only worms that Can be transferred by fleas is Diplydium caninum which is a tapeworm passed to the dog when bitten by the flea.
Vet prescribed treatments are usually the strongest and most reliable. Hope that all helps?0 -

Yeah, that does make a lot of sense. I was getting somewhere with socialising him during the summer when I was at home- he spent a lot of time with a friend's dog and they were fine together. But then I took him to my Mum and Dad's house and he and their Jack Russell had a horrible fight which terrified me, and I got bitten by one of them (I really shouldn't have tried to separate them, but it was almost my instinct).
Since moving away a couple of months ago, I only know people from work and haven't made any 'out of work' friends, so finding someone with a dog to walk together is more difficult. I looked into some dog classes, but unfortunately I just can't afford them at the moment. It's a bit of a nightmare really cos he's just so nasty towards other dogs if they dare to come over to him for a sniff!0 -
Have had a trip to the vets today to get it all sort out. Was pretty shocked with the cost- bought new worming tablets, stronghold for the fleas and RIP fleas for the house. Phew, so now down to almost nothing for myself to live off this month, but I suppose it's worth it for a healthy little man! Thanks all for the help.0

i remember a vet saying to my indignant friend once, when she was upset and confused about how her indoor cat got fleas,,, that fleas are omnipotent,,, so thats how0

Re muzzle.
I also have a small dog which thanks to the advice on this forum, now muzzle when out walking. Chewing gum and cigs were more her thing but if eating unwanted items causes problems I would recommend it. She looks ridiculous but it solves the problem!0 -

Well, I was just asking really, I suspected that they could be from just being outdoors in general... or from the previous dog in the flat. Just interesting to ask other peoples advice.0
