Plusnet have upset me this weekend by withdrawing international calls without telling me, and then having a major attitude problem when I ask for my £80 back. (Even going so far as to suggest that I should have signed in to their website every day to check for updates to terms and conditions. What makes them think they're special enough to earn 10 minutes of my attention every day when all I want is the ability to transact a bit of data?)
Anyway. My requirements are simple; basic broadband (out in the sticks so bottlenecked to 5mbps anyway), line rental, and the odd call to Poland by my Mrs.
Simple you'd think, but the usual response I've had after posing that question to various sales departments today has been (and I'm sorry if this isn't the most politically correct way of putting it) for them to stick their tongue in their bottom lip and bang the backs of their hands together. Kind of like Plusnet's response when I told them that if I bought a TV from Comet they couldn't spontaneously start charging me £80 every time I used the DVD player next year. And especially not without telling me or achieving some level of agreement with me!
Anyway, there seems to be a lot of b****ks about certain exchanges not supporting 'their technologies' (I though ADSL was all the same and provided and maintained by BT anyway?) which is also causing a lot of confusion. All I need is the bare minimum to access the internet and make calls, the odd one of which happens to be international.
Is there anything anyone can recommend to me? Or at least a service provider who's sales employees' favourite flavour of ice-cream isn't 'window'?

Looks like you are unlucky and are on the Thirsk exchange which has no LLU presence.
So you can choose any ISP you wish but unfortunately you won't get the lowest rates. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
