Check whether she's digesting her food properly. My dog used to eat her own faeces when she was on tinned food as it was going straight through - she didn't realise it was pooh, she just thought dinner had come round twice. Once I changed to dried food and she digested it more effectively, she stopped doing it. Rawhide chews are a big no for the same reason.
The same with other dogs faeces -she tries to eat it if it smells like food to her, but ignores the well digested ones. The best way round that is to really teach and reinforce the "leave" command. That way, they should still leave it alone regardless of what they think it is. (That's the theory any way - sometimes works with mutt, sometimes doesn't - I still have to spot it in time to call her away before she's nose down and scoffing.)
You have to remember that they don't have the same revulsion we feel around dog mess -to them it's another interesting smell and they have no idea why we're doing our nut at them!
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Ive been watching pup over last 2 days and she only eats goes for the ones after she has just eaten, so i think it is that she thinks its food, she is on Science plan vet essentials large puppy, so she maybe not digesting that properly and as stated previously she thinks its a second meal  I am working on the leave it technique, sometimes she listens straight away and others i have to head towards her to get her to move...
i will keep working on it..:)
  • Our terrier pup outgrew eating poo at around 8-9 months so hopefully yours will too. Yes, it was horrible while it lasted, I don't think ours was diet related though.

Please don't let them see you pick up their poo otherwise they will think they have to 'clean up after themselves' and it may make the situation worse.

I'm pretty sure this is not a thought process that occurs in dogs - you never see them trying to lap up a pool of wee, do you? Just calmly clear up, if you are cross with them they may eat it quickly to avoid a teling off. Or if you make a big show of clearing up, they may think they'll join in the fun too!

My poo snuffler is now a real assett when out and someone poos and I can't find it because I clicker trained her to sniff and then come to me for a reward to stop her from eating it.

At the time was just teaching her not to eat poo but now she finds lost ones on command that I need to pick up.
A dog with a behaviour problem needs help not punishment.
  • Does she have a squeaky toy? Might be worth squeaking it to distract her every time she approaches the poo - then call her over and make a fuss of her.

At least she doesn't roll - my dog (white) love rolling in sheep poo - any ideas how to turn a greed dog white again!
  • I thought it was to do with building their immune system against nasties like e-coli.
  • yes the westie i have just loves to roll in fox dodah she did it a couple of weeks ago took me ages to get rid of the smell !
    stay lucky!
    Steve.
