Puppy eats faeces..

I have a 5 month old chocolate labradoodle, we picked her up when she was 13 weeks old. She is lovely in every way, apart from she sometimes eats her own poops.. and i hate it.. she stinks really bad when she does it, has anyone got any ideas how i can get her to stop...
Any advice will be greatfully received

Does she only eat her own poops or does she eat other dogs aswell?
Do you shout at her when she does it?
What matters most is how well you walk through the fire
  • The dog is probably short of some trace elements.Take it to a vet and they will prescribe some medicine. Saw this in a dog 30 years ago. You might also be advised as to a diet supplement. (The dogs-not yours. Sorry, couldn't resist) Good luck

The only sure-fire way is too make sure you clear up after her BEFORE she has a chance to eat it. If she stayed with her Mum til 13 weeks old, it is a common learnt behaviour as Mum's tend to clear up after pups by eating their poop! A lot of Labs are such scavengers that they will eat poo out on walks too, whether it be other dog's , rabbit's or sheep - yuk.

I tried mixing cooked courgette, pineapple or orange peel in with my last Lab's food, but it made no difference. Putting tobasco sauce on the offending articles didn't work either :(. When fully grown, you could try her on Autarky dry dog food. Mine didn't seem so keen on recycling that - though it could be she that just eventually grew out of it!

    Hi,

It is a common problem and one they should grow out of. You can buy deter tablets from the vets to make faeces taste foul and stop them doing it. Pineapple juice also has the same effect, put small amount in drinking water and willmake faeces taste acidic.

    Good luck!
  • thank you will try pineapple x

I used to go nuts when my dog did it, and then realised I was the main part of the problem. All the things like pineapple juice, and tablets etc, none of them worked and he ate all the poo he could, as fast as he could.

As soon as I realised it was my reaction that was causing the issue (he thought uh oh, poo really makes her cross, I had better hide the evidence as fast as I can) I just stopped reacting, ignored it, tried to ensure he couldn't get to the poo before I did but if he did, made no reaction, and it stopped in less than a week.

My westie also did this as a pup. Sometimes it was because she had a poo in the house and although we never told her off she didnt like it and so tried to clear it up. Other times it was because she was hungry and liked the taste of her poo as he was on a particular brand of dry food but also had a bit of meat with it. The meat was partially undigested so she was eating it again - so to speak. I changed her dry food to James Well beloved and she digested it the first time round!
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

I dont shout at her, i just watch her all the time until she does the toilet then i pick it up, thats okay if we are out walking but if i go home at lunchtime to let her out in the garden i then have to stand at the door until she goes to the toilet,
She doesnt eat other dog poop, only because when out walking on lead i pull her away from it, she goes over to smell, i dont give her a chance to eat it so i cant say if she would,.
She doesnt always eat it, sometimes she does the toilet then walks away, other times she does.. I will just keep leading her away from it until hopefully she gets the message.. :)
