As soon as you are able, get off LPG asap. It is constantly the most expensive fuel source anywhere. .......It is even worse than electricicty heating and that is bad enough...............

Let's get some accurate info - and I'm assuming the latest figures (4th May 2011) from NEP, the Notts Energy Partnership, will supply them.

They've made assumptions, all stated, about fuel costs and boiler efficiency but:

    Electricity* at 13.44p/kWh costs 13.44p/kWh
Mains gas at 3.90p/kWh costs 4.33p/kWh
    Kerosene at 62.81ppl costs 7.12p/kWh
Gas oil at 77.94ppl costs 8.33p/kWh
    LPG at 50.63ppl costs 8.45p/KWh
Seasoned wood at 13.72p/kg costs 4.28p/kWh

......... and they also give figures for pellets, smokeless fuel, coal, GSHP and ASHP. *But not Economy7.

You'll need to put in local figures. And maintenance costs, etc. Not to mention factoring in installation costs, where relevant.

But of course the figures are only a snapshot for the beginning of this month, with figures for Nottingham. Crystal balls not included.

Yes, I've been on bulk LPG for 20 years - but I doubt if I'd go that route now.

We moved to this property on 30th March. Flogas was 45p per litre. On the 1st April it went up to 66p per litre. We were not informed of this price rise. This is way above inflation and quite ridiculous. Thank goodness we are only at this property temporarily. Our bill for ONE month is £100.51. No negotiation!!!:mad:

Like you we got fed up being treated like cash cows by BP for 18 years and decided to change to Oil. We needed to upgrade the back boiler which was about 25 years old and also the radiators.
We found a local company with a good reputation who advised us on the new Condensing Comby boiler and better quality radiators.
It was a hassle with all the floorboards coming up and the boiler coming out the fireplace but changing from LPG to Oil with the new boiler saved us £1000 heating cost in the first year.
We also dont have the problem of being tied into one supplier and when we need Oil phone around the 5 suppliers in our area and get the cheapest price.
I kept gas for cooking and just get the bottles from a local company.
I would recommend anyone who is dealing with shady gas suppliers to get rid of them and go with Oil if they can afford the change over.

    Couldn't agree more.

From an upfront cost perspective switching to oil was painful (requiring new boiler, new base for the oil tank, the oil tank itself) but I reckon it will pay for itself only after about 2 years which is pretty good. And I don't dread ordering oil anything like as much as I did LPG and don't feel quite as exploited by the oil companies because as you say you can at least call round for quotes, no "standing charge", etc.
  • Getting off LPG was the best decision we ever made too, it's a mugs game.

The only LPG worth having is for the BBQ... Hmmm I wonder if there is a way to connect the BBQ to the bulk tank which is still at 60 odd % ;)

Thinking about it... If I did this would likely be my last post! :rotfl:
