Depends on your budget & what you want out of it... You need to decide how adventerous you want to be, where you'd like to go.
You can get some good round the world tickets which can be a great basis for a trip. Trailfinders are often pretty good. If you're under 26 you can sometimes get cheaper flights, it's worth checking out.
Some friends of mine recently went overland from London to China by train & cheap flights. Then flew to Thailand,Malaysia, Australia & ended up in New Zealand, took them about 8 months.0 -
April is a long way away....... go to TRAILFINDERS at the end of February. They were able to organise my trip within a month of my leaving date including all visa (s) and necessary immunisations. In the meantime it is a great site for you to do some browsing around.
Make sure you look at 'around the world travel insurance ...again shop around Wexas, at the time when I did my trip' was very good, came hightly recommended and was resonably priced.FREEDOM IS NOT FREE0 -
I wouldn't leave it until the new year to book if you know you are going. Nov/Dec is one of the best times to book a holiday for next year and discounts are often offered since everyone else is thinking about Christmas.
RTW tickets can only use a certain number of seats on the plane and once they are gone they are gone, so the sooner you book the better.
I just received an email from STA Travel with a special offer for Down Under which most people include on their RTW but it says that you can have 6 free stops, which will no doubt be Thailand etc

I love Russia, especially Siberia. It has the most amazing scenery & architecture. I'd read loads before I went, but was still totally taken by surprise. It sounds dramatic but it has that kind of beauty that just makes you want to cry!
You rarely get to see it on tv so it was quite a shock.
I started in St Petersburg then pootled across to Irkutsk by train, stopping off en route. I'd always wanted to visit Lake Baikal & it was the hilight of a trip full of amazing experiences. I would recommend St Petersburg to anyone, but especially if you're into art. I love museums but even I had too much of a good thing at The Hermitage! Can't wait to go back though.
Lots of my friends have been to Talinn, Riga & Vilnius & had a fab time. These are good stopping off points if you're heading towards Russia & all served by cheap flights. You can probably get trains from all of them to St Petersburg. I'm pretty sure there's a train from Helsinki too.0 -
Anywhere in the South Pacific. Have a look at:-
https://www.southpacific.org
Cook Islands, Samoa & Tahiti are good choices for stops of say, 3 weeks or less.
If opting for longer stays, Fiji and Tonga are also good.
The Escapade fare mentioned in a previous post, would allow you to visit both Tonga/Samoa or Fiji/Cook Islands/Tahiti.
Best time to visit the region is April through to October (dry season).
