  • I would have thought it reasonable to expect yours to be replaced with a model of similar spec, regardless of original price. What's their reason for not offering an exact replacement, and what do the T&Cs of the guarantee say?

It says ".....replace it for one of a similar make and specification".

Problem is much seems to have changed in 4.75 years!

Flashy LCD screens now only exist on top of the range models (but I am rather partial to flashy LCD screens) and our model was middle of the range then!

Indeed, you'd expect it to be like for like, but there's no legal issue here, it's entirely dependent on what the T&C of the guarantee says. If it says you get the cash equivalent, then that's what you're entitled to.

Could you not offer to pay the difference in price between what's offered and the model you want?

'Similar specification'. There you go. List what yours does (regardless of flashy lights). List what the one you want does (I assume they'll tally fairly well). List how the one they're offering falls short of your original spec. Quote the T&Cs. Good luck.

Look Fluffnutter, I am a bloke. I don't care what is washes like; the flashy lights are all important to me!:D

Now 'er indoors wants it to wash, dry and put the plates back in the cupboard whilst sweeping the kitchen floor as it goes!

The dead one looked like something from the Enterprize, the proposed one looks like something from Thunderbirds!

Use the above in your letter of complaint. It's all the justification you need.

I'd have thought the bloke making the final decision would be more impressed with that line :D

On a serious note, the problem you face is that the guarantee will have it's own terms attached, and you cannot change those in any form. If they state that you get similar, then that's all they have to offer you. The suggestion above by Mark Hewitt about paying the difference might get you further. They may give you a trade price on a higher spec model.

    I liked Lady Penelope best!

Actually I quite fancied her, what with the rolls and all...being a kept boy (at the time) true money saving!
