I once dried what I thought was a wet plate and put it away in the crockery cupboard. The next day the smell from said cupboard was horrendous - like dead carcasses or something. bleugh. Turned out hubby had defrosted chicken on the plate so it was wet with lovely chickeny juices when I dried it. If you empty the cupboard does it still smell? Worth a try?

we had a terrible kitchen cupboard smell last year, we tore the place apart trying to find it, it really drove us nuts, it took 3 months to discover that it was coming from the drain, it wasn't blocked when the smell started so we discounted this, but it did eventually block which finally lead us to the smell, went instantly as soon as the drains were jetted.

the smell must have been backing up from the drain in the garden for ages, before the blockage became apparent.

hope you find the cause, it really is frustrating

Is there an air brick or vent in the wall behind the cupboard ?
  • Once you've found the problem and sorted it, the cupboard will prob still smell. Sort this with cat litter, it will absorb the smell, change as often as necessary.
  • What is in the room upstairs? Reason I ask is that we had this exact same problem, turned out to be water leaking down the side of the bath upstairs, down through the joists, into the kitchen behind the tiles and into the wood of the cupboard carcass. It was a very slow trickly leak but over time was enough to start rotting the wood at the back of the cupboard and causing the smell!!

We completely removed the cupboard from the wall, splashed some water around in the bathroom upstairs and sure enough you could see the trickles of water coming down the wall from behind the tiles...

I got a second opinion on the smell today and the person who inspected the cupboard thinks the smell is coming off the wood. This is odd as there is no smell coming from any of the other cupboards that are made of te same wood type.

When the cupboard is empty it still smells and the room above the cupboard is a bedroom.

Can you remove the cupboard fom the wall and leave it in another room for a day or so? If it still honks, then it is the cupboard itself that is the cause of the smell.
