The 'no more overbuying pet food' challenge

Board Guides: please move this thread if it needs to go elsewhere. Not sure if it should be under one of the other money sections.

Well I've had a shock, looking at how much cat food I've bought on special offer and in bulk. (I buy my stuff online). I don't need to buy any for quite some time and need to really discipline myself not to. :rotfl: In fact, I've prob over stocked on guinea pig food too...:o

Is obsessively buying pet food something anyone else can identify with??
If so, I wondered if anyone is in the same boat and would like to join me in this, along the lines of the 'no more toiletries/books/clothes etc' challenges on the forum?

I'm going to tally up exactly how much food I have and post on here later. Oh dear...:(

So hope I'm not alone. I shall feel really stupid! :rotfl:

  • its not just me then!

I am a compulsive bulk buyer but if you have the space and it will be used before the sbd then I think its sensible especially in view of rising prices, its getting a better return than money in the bank!

    We've never done this :p

We buy a large bag of dry food for the dogs and know precisely when it will run out, so we know when to budget for another. We buy exactly the right amount of catfood for one week when we do the grocery shopping. No waste, no use-by dates to monitor. We know exactly what we're buying, and when. Think it must be my obsessive, controlling streak ;)

That's always been my motivation. But I think it's a bit out of hand for me! And I do have 6 cats and 4 guinea pigs, so we get through a fair bit. However, since changing to more expensive food, I find they need to eat much less and we're not getting through it v fast. BB dates are OK on the cat food I think. Not sure about the guinea pig food.

    My job for later!

Oh and yes, since moving I do have the space. And I've grown into it :rotfl: - hence the 'problem'!

    I'm all for positive obsessions!

I've always liked to have something as back-up in case of illness or something (and a couple of times I've been unable to get out/ill and it's been a relief to have some food in the garage to fall back on). However, I want to get to soemthing like you, where I pretty much just have what I'm using, plus a bag or box of tins spare.

    Zooplus is my major weakness!
I agree about making use of the discounts.
But I do it too much!

I've been feeding the Pets At Home own brand of dried food. When I went in last week they were doing 2 for the price of 1... had to be done! :T

I dont overbuy their food, we order it when they have about 3-4 days left (good delivery :))

But I do have a problem with chews!! Up until xmas i was buying 1 6 pack of chews (1.99) every 3 days, I've now decided that they dont need a chew every day, so have stopped buying them, they dont seem to be missing them!
I'm not a bloke! :rotfl:My real name is Sinead, Sid is my nickname :rotfl:

Oh Gosh I am so happy to hear that I am not the only one suffering this obsession. In fact since the arrival of 2 kittens....and various geriatric illnesses in the oldies I have got pretty out of control! I often walk around the supermarket muttering my mantra of 'No cat food and NO cat toys' but it isn't really working.
Apart from the ( very healthy) stock in various kitchen cupboards, I have a stash of Natures Menu in my spare bedroom and a freezer full of home made raw. Oh, and Zooplus are sending £50 worth of Bozita/Animonda later this week.:o Well I had a 10% off voucher to use up!
Did that stop me picking up a 6 pack of Butchers Classic in Sainsbury's today? Oh and 6 Gourmet Perle on Special offer too.....
