So what if she's plump and wears glasses, what point are you making?

Identifying a member of staff whom he did not know the name of that he felt was rude?

Or in a more polite way, "the woman on the till" ;)

But remember, his mini novel is actually a formal letter of complaint to Next head office.

Would you consider it acceptable in that context?

Ignoring the rest of the letter/email, having worked in head office for a national retailer I can assure you that such descriptions were common in customer letters whether complaining about or giving praise to staff. Maybe I am 'desensitised', but I rarely batted an eyelid when I read it.

People from every walk of life are entitled to complain. It doesn't matter a jot if your letter writing skills are top notch or could use some polishing, the fact is if you can make your point clear, then that's all that is required.

And just to show the other side of the coin with regards to describing someone, I had cause to complain about a British Gas caller. Credit to BG, they took my complaint very seriously and I was asked to give as full a description of the person involved as possible, including body shape, hair colour and if she wore glasses or not. Sometimes 'plump' is a perfectly accurate adjective.

I bet she knows the difference between bare naked and bear in mind.
I'm cuddly and wear glasses (except in moments of extreme passion) and as I've taken offence at your remarks I'm going to offer no suggestions whatsoever :rotfl:

You take offence at someone describing someone else? If you are thin/fat/plump/purple or green expect to be described as such. What point are you making?

The same one as others have made - that it's IRRELEVANT. Especially in the first instance of contacting a company.
