Ex Company Car Insurance - Any Advice?

Any advice would be great, up until recently I had a company car (I've been driving company cars since around 1994 with a break of around 2 years in 2002-2004), however due to the company I was working for going into administration, I have changed jobs and had to go and buy a car... I thought insurance would be relatively expensive, maybe up to £1200-1300 because of the area I live (Salford) and the high mileage that I do (up to around 25k per year) but I'm getting quotes of upwards of £4000 which seem ridiculous.

It all seems to be that I can't use the company car history as the company car was damaged by a third party driver last year whilst parked (Driver never stopped and CCTV images didn't show numberplates)

I have a couple of quotes from "High Excess" insurance companies offering circa £1200 policies with £3000 excess - does anyone have any experience of dealing with these sort of policies?

Is there anything I can do to get a reasonable quote from anywhere without taking one of these policies?

    Thanks.

It's not ridiculous for a pickup at all - they are very high risk vehicles. £3k on an L200 with nil NCD and a fault claim in the last 3 years sounds fair (especially if, as your username suggests, you live in an 'M' postcode).

My advice would be for your husband to buy either a car (a pickup is classed as a commercial vehicle, not a private car) or a more modest commercial vehicle type (i.e. a van under 3 tonnes gross weight) if he needs to move tools.
