Ex Company Car Insurance - Any Advice?

Any advice would be great, up until recently I had a company car (I've been driving company cars since around 1994 with a break of around 2 years in 2002-2004), however due to the company I was working for going into administration, I have changed jobs and had to go and buy a car... I thought insurance would be relatively expensive, maybe up to £1200-1300 because of the area I live (Salford) and the high mileage that I do (up to around 25k per year) but I'm getting quotes of upwards of £4000 which seem ridiculous.

It all seems to be that I can't use the company car history as the company car was damaged by a third party driver last year whilst parked (Driver never stopped and CCTV images didn't show numberplates)

I have a couple of quotes from "High Excess" insurance companies offering circa £1200 policies with £3000 excess - does anyone have any experience of dealing with these sort of policies?

Is there anything I can do to get a reasonable quote from anywhere without taking one of these policies?

Thanks.

Speak to a broker. Search this forum. Search under Google.
  • I've had no other claims than the 3rd party hitting the parked car, and no points on my license, I'm just the good side of 40 (driving since 18 with no claims since someone crashed into the back of the car whilst I was stopped at a pedestrian crossing in early 90s) - I'm goggle eyed from Google, and, from the number of online forms I've filled in I'll probably be plagued by unwanted telephone calls for the next six months!

Pop into a local High Street Broker (Or give them a call), don't bother with Swintons though.

There are plenty of Insurers that will allow a no claims bonus for a company car driver, you will normally need confirmation on headed paper of your driving experience. If the company is no more it may be a case of getting this from the Adminstrator / Liquidator, speak to the broker first and they can guide you through it
  • Thanks for that - I'll go see someone tomorrow, It is just making me insane that I can't call someone who knows what they are talking about, the guy from Aviva (Foreign call centre) quoted me £11,000 - I thought he had read it incorrectly - he really couldn't understand why I didn't want to take out the policy!

It's not an unusual situation, a local broker should be able to sort you out, it's often better to pop in and see them if you get a chance as it's often better to deal face to face.

Funnily enough a broker would often use Aviva for an excompany car driver as they have a discount for them if they meet certain criteria, brokers have different rules with Aviva than when you deal with Aviva direct

    Hi everyone,

Do any of you know which car insurance companies look sympathetically at ex company car drivers,
I am coming up to retirement and for the first time in more years than I care to remember, I will need to buy and insure a car.
    Any info appreciated.
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left!

But this will need to state that you had full SDP use too with the majority of insurerws.

Try SAGA - they accepted a statement re my driving record (no accidents or claims!) from my ex employers when I retired. Also turned out to be one of the cheaper quotes.

    Thanks for that.
I am fortunately accident and claim free so I was hoping to shop around for the best price.
Saga will be a good place to start.
