Returning a phone and software updates (Vodafone - within 7 days)

Just wondering if anyone could shine a bit of light on my current situation - I'm about to start a contract with Vodafone, with an HTC Desire. My old phone was an iPhone 3G, so I'm a bit worried that despite the Desire being a good phone it simply wont compete. As such I'm very aware I have 7 working days to return the phone to Vodafone (bought it over the phone) from date of delivery.

However, from what I've read the Desire really does benefit from being upgraded to Android 2.2. I'd could also be keen to root it, but if I was to update it to 2.2 rather than 2.1, would the phone still be regarded as being in its "the product is in its original, saleable condition" (which Vodafone say it must be in to return it)?

Cheers for any thoughts...

if it's an offical vodafone upgrade you'll be fine.

Root it and put on a custom ROM and you'll prbably find they won't accept it. Mind you depends how much they check...

Once you've rooted and installed a custom rom it you've lost any guarantee. They can tell and they do check because so many people are doing without understanding what their doing, bricking the phone and then trying to send it back as 'faulty'.

If you wan it a Desire with 2.2 get a sim free which will have the HTC 2.2 on it or will update if it's not.

Thanks for the replies. Just read up a bit and it appears that Vodafone rolled out a 2.2 update themselves, so hopefully the Desire will come preloaded with it.

If not, as there is an official Vodafone update, I see no reason why it would break warranty or condition for me to update it... Then again, you never know.

Unless someone can concretely say they won't mind if I update it, even with their own update to 2.2, then I suppose I'll be better of playing it safe until I decide whether I want to keep it or not. No use being stuck with a phone I don't want just because I tested it properly...

If you update with an official Voda firmware, your safe. If you go to somewhere like XDA and get a custom firmware and use that you've lost your warranty.
