It's worth reading up on Martins article Reclaim Unfair Bank Charges on the main page of the site. I found the info on the https://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk most useful (including template letters to send to the bank).
I'm currently running four different cases for people (helping them through the process of reclaiming their bank charges). Three of these are in the early stage (Data Access Request), and one case has gone to court.
The first case was reclaiming over £2600 from Natwest. They have so far offered £260, then £1300, then £1700 to settle the case. We have turned all these down because the court claim (you are allowed to claim 8%pa interest in the small claims court) is for over £3300.
They say they will defend this claim (as they have told many others before), but we are looking forward to going to court with them. Banks are allowed to only charge a reasonable amount to send out letters to you (to cover their costs), not impose a penalty charge. If we go to court, we will be asking for proof of how much it actually costs the bank to print out and post a letter (far less than even £12). I can't see them wanting to disclose this info, so am confident they will settle in full before we go to court (as banks have been doing up and down the country for thousands of people). How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?
