what a rip offfffffff

Hi Guys.. Not sure if this is the place to post but it is a vent.... Is it normal to be charged £30 every time I go into my overdraft using my debit card?
I only used £120 for one week and they took another £30 to make it £150before I put my account back into the black. They charged me £30 and even used my overdraft to take it.. what a rip off.

Thanks

Kev

  • I am sure if you've got an ARRANGED overdraft you aren't charged anything other than the interest. I may be mistaken since I haven't ever needed an overdraft, but thats how I understood it.

Post this in the Savings/Banking forum and tell them what bank and account you have. But you should be able to check your own documents for the terms and conditions of your charges.

Yes this is a usual sort of charge if you have not pre arranged the overdraft. I read in the news they are putting up the charge for going overdrawn when you shouldnt as well.

Ring them up and they will explain their charges but if it wasnt arranged you will get charged.

Definately will get charged if its unauthorised.. I always arrange an authorised overdraft facility as accidents do happen and it just gives you that leeway if you are 'sailing close to the wind' with your balance...
I am a good girl and have only gone into my overdraft once by accident but it saved me from charges and only cost me a couple of £s........

    I'd check with your bank...

Bank charges are now illegal - claim it back.

'Illegal' may be overegging it a bit. IIUC the regulator (i.e. not a law making body) has pressured the banks into not charging excessive charges that aren't in line with their actual costs. The accepted figure seems to be £12. I think people have mostly been claiming back the difference between what they've been charged and the £12.

There was a long discussion on it on this board a few months back, and obviously elsewhere on the main part of the site regarding how to claim back. AFAIK banks are still allowed to charge fees for going over agreed overdraft limits but probably not £30. Though that's before you get into the account T&Cs which was the focus of the last discussion!

    I wouldn't say it's normal at all.

What bank are you with? Are you sure that they have your overdraft agreed on file?

Unlawful not illegal, and they always have been :)
