Hi,
Got a new laptop for Xmas with my Mr. T tokens - very pleased with myself until I realised that the only word processing that it's got is Notepad. The documents that are on my old laptop, that I'm hoping to transfer (not that I know how to ) were done using Word.

To try to access these documents, I am considering buying the Microsoft Office software, but I can only afford it if I can get it for the student price of £38.99.

In trying to do this I have encountered 2 problems that hopefully someone can help me with.

Firstly,
when visiting the microsoft website it is advertising the cost of the Office package to students as £38.89, but when you click on the link the price comes up as over £10 more and I can't find any link on the site to query this discrepancy.

Secondly,
we have a 13 year old son - does he qualify as a student so that we can qualify for the student price.

Here's hoping that someone whose managed to get Office at the discount price can help, thanks in advance if you can.

kje.

    Hi again,
Thanks for such prompt replies. Never heard of Open Office, but I've just had a quick look and it looks great - thanks again fmd.

Dipsomaniac - thanks for your info. if its not too much trouble do you remember which website did you used to get this price and what evidence did you have to provide to prove your child's eligibility?

Thanks again for troubling to reply. kje.
  • open office is fine - use it on all the computers at home. DD's school rent / sell notebooks to the whole of year 8/9 to use through the school. All (200) have open office installed before they were given out, kids are fine with it

    Hi all,

Thanks again for all of the replies.

I have downloaded Open Office onto my old laptop just to give it a try and it seems ok but I haven't a clue how to make the documents I created in word open with Open Office 'cos that's what will have to happen with my new laptop.

Is it possible to do what I'm proposing? If it is possible can someone tell me how to do it, 'cos even if I buy microsoft office I think I'll still have the same problem. Thanks again to dipsomaniac for the web address.

All the info. provided is very much appreciated. kje.
