Even if it was flu (which it wasn't) then walking around in the open air in an area that isn't crowded really isn't that high a risk.

If he was on a packed tube train, or in a cinema, bad idea. Just on the street and not directly breathing, coughing or sneezing onto anyone? The bugs aren't going to last long enough in the air to infect anyone else I wouldn't have thought.

Also, why have so many people forgotten about normal flu? Everybody seems to be claiming swine flu and I'm pretty sure they haven't all been swabbed and tested! Is it more glamorous or exciting to have the porcine rather than common or garden variety flu?!

I think its because the press have made a big thing of it this year, making a point of telling us that the flu jab 'also includes swine flu' etc, when we never usually know (or care!) which strains we are being vaccinated against. This, combined with last years OTT reaction and overuse of antiviral drugs, has made people far more afraid of it than they need be.
