Refilling brother cartridge with ink for HP printer

I'm reposting this here as it got no response on the consumables board.:(

I'm just wondering if anybody has any idea if refilling the black cartridge from my Brother Printer with ink from a refill kit I have for my departed HP printer would be ok?

I'm a little confused as with the refill kits, you buy for a particular printer/brand so am unsure if the inks from different brands are not compatible.

I know the Brother cartridges are cheap, but finding I have 2 boxes of the refill kits still for the old HP I wondered if I could use them up in this way in true moneysaver style.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

  • A lot of inks these days are described as universal ink. I would suspect that the worst that would happen is that if the ink were unsitable for any reason either it wouldnt print or it would clog up the printer heads. If the printer heads are on the cartridge and not the printer then I wouldnt worry-you could just mess up a cartridge which has more or less had its life anyway. Ive never worried what ink I use but thats me and only you can assess your risks. Ive never experienced a problem with the inks mixing-they may or may not be the same quality. Personally I would give it a go.

    hi, Cattie,
you should not have a problem as the inks are mostly the same. The printer manufacturers would like you to buy only their expensive ink, so go to great lengths to make you scared of using any other type.

Branding the ink is usually to stop people worrying if it will be ok in their printer, when usually it all comes from the same unbranded supply.
