Direct Debit Payment Taken By MBNA

Greetings,

I did a balance transfer last month from MBNA to Halifax, the minimum payment before the balance transfer was about £50, obviously the balance transfer paid for this and my account was updated to show minimum payment of £0 due by 8 Jan 2011.

Imagine my suprise when today they have taken £50 by direct debit, ie the original minimum payment. Am I wasting my time attempting to get them to give me this back? Have I fallen into a well known trap etc or are they in the wrong?

Many thanks

  • DD are usually requested a few days before the due date,if you have overpaid MBNA by £50 the just request they refund it to you

I don't know about MBNA in particular but some banks will take the agreed DD anyway regardless of any additional payment you may make in the meantime. And for those that don't the cut off period may be longer than you would think.

If it's any help I can tell you that this message was first added to bills in October 2010.

The direct debit thing has caught me out before in the past, fortunately I had enough money to cover the DD and my extra payment.
  • Please don't think you won't get the money back - just phone MBNA and they will either credit your bank account or send you a cheque. They're not actually going to steal your money!

It's not a great issue, luckily I've got a topcashback payment for nearly the same sum coming in soon and I suppose it's going to a "good cause" (ie paying off my balance quicker) in theory...I believe in live and learn so I might just take the hit :o

Hell no ! Give them a quick bell in the morning or on a lunch break or something, explain what you said here and they should refund the £50 to your bank or send a cheque, geeze - do not let £50 slide!
