Slow windows computer - how to make it faster

I've got a dell desktop computer running vista sp2. It's got an intel quad core processor, a half decent graphics card and 2gb of ram.

It runs so slowly though. I regularly run a virus scan on it and also regularly do full system scans with spybot and malwarebytes so I'm pretty sure there are no viruses or malware on there. I've ran check disk for errors and bad sectors, I've defragmented the drive, run disk clean up and run ccleaner regularly. Also I've recently I've uninstalled all the programs that I don't use regularly.

After doing all of this, I've found that the computer is still slow. Other than totally reformatting and restarting with a fresh installation of windows is there anything else I could do to make my system faster?

All other things being equal , a fresh install would speed things up/ what interim since your last install/ another 1GB could help too //

The only reason why i have spybot is because it's highly recommended as an anti malware tool

It's more than 3 years since it had a fresh install

I was looking at reinstalling windows but it has a raid 0 set up, would reinstalling windows effect this?

Microsoft Security Essentials is as fast as any other in my experience. AVG is particularly bad for system slowdowns though.

Go with Avast ! It's wonderful/ And remember , Windows 7 has Defender built-in which will work alongside Avast. But go with Avast ;)
