Baby on the way...what are the essential buys?

  • I think the term 'essentials' may also depend on your lifestyle and room you have in your house!!

As I knew I would be driving a travel system is an essential for me and much more convienient to move a sleeping baby from a car to a pram rather than transfering them, especially when its cold - obviously I don't keep him in it all day. If you can get a carrycot attachment for the pushchair I found it useful but I got mine second hand off ebay (def worth doing).

Again to save money we have been given/lent a moses basket (always buy a new mattress), cot, chair downstairs for the day, a bumbo, playgym and too many clothes for him to wear. It is worth asking friends/relatives with little ones what you can borrow as they probably want to get rid of it for the space anyway.

If you are planning on bf I would buy an electronic pump but maybe best to see if you can do it, the advantage is that your OH could do one feed at late eve/night to give you a break. Re sterilising I recently bought a small travel steriliser from boots that you can use either in the microwave or as a cold water thing with tablets. As I am bfing with odd bottles/expressing I find it more handy just to put a coupleof bottles in there rather than faff with a microwave big thing I had -plus it keeps things sterile for 24 hours rather than the microwave that as soon as you open it they are no longer sterile, so you have to resterilise them again!

I was going to recommend the baby sleeping bags (wonderful if you've got a wriggly child!) but had it in my mind that they're not suitable from birth? I may be imagining that though!

I think you can now buy ones that are suitable from birth, a few years ago the baby had to be 9 or 10 lbs before you could use them.
  • i highly recoomend the sleeping bags aswell my son does not tolerate having a blanket over him, it makes him go ballistic :rotfl: the ones i have are for 0-6mnths but i think the baby has to be at least 8lb before you use them.

also this may not be essential but id reccomend some sort of bouncer. it means if im on my own in the house im able to strap the the baby in it while i make bottles do washing etc. i dont know how i would ever get anything done with mine!!

for sleepsuits i would really reccomend asda ones! i had originally bought mine from primark and next and tbh they were both as bad as each other. went all bally at the back because of the rubbing trying to get his wind up. so when i was buying new ones i tried asda and they are fab!

Thanks for all the useful replies guys, i am compiling many many lists and any nfo is gratefully received. It's made me realise a couple of things
    a) there are many more things available for babies than i ever thought possible
    b) most of those things are non essential luxuries
    c) the things which ARE essential seem to be obvious once someone else says it

    thanks

Ok, after googling, it appears they are only about 3-4 cm long and you put them over the baby's pe nis to stop the baby from sprinkling when you change the baby's nappy...don't think i'll be purchasing just yet!
