To be fair to the OP the mobile phone companies don't make a point of advertising their roaming charges. We sort of expect to pay some silly money for the odd call home from abroad on our mobiles but we're talking £20-£40 for our silliness whilst we've had one too many.

Data charges are a whole new ballgame and one that the mobile companies seem to have seized upon as a way to make high revenue until the authorities get into gear and stop this sharp practice.

I took delivery of an HTC Desire in September last year on contract and went to Cyprus at the end of September for 11 days. Fortunately, I decided to leave my contract SIM card at home and took my PAYG SIM which had £15 credit on it. Well, I decided to take a look at the satellite view of my lovely apartments and have a quick look around the nearby roads. The result was that I burned my £15 credit in 15 minutes!!!

I was so glad that I only had the PAYG SIM, imagine the damage I could do on a contract SIM where the phone companies are happy to see you run up £££'s of debt!

It's about time that the mobile companies were shackled with a £100 or so limit on a bill unless authorised to ignore that limit. It's shocking that mobile companies allow such huge bills to be racked up without question.

As someone points out above, there is just such capping of roaming data cost within the EU.

o2 Monthly seem to cap at 40GBP / 50MB (whichever is the greatest) globally http://www.o2international.co.uk/usingdataabroad/PayMonthly.aspx

You may be right, What I meant was there is EU law that puts a cost cap in place when using roaming data, but it only applies to roaming in EU countries on a EU contract, (ie fine on my UK vodafone contract in france, spain, belgiuum etc but no good in the USA, Australiia, japan and so on.)

    Thanks guys.

DUTR, I signed up for Data Roaming in 2008 with my old Sony Ericsson (so Orange reminded me) when I went to Poland. Didnt give it a second thought.

    Cheers ;)

Not sure what you did not give a 2nd thought, get the bill paid up quickly please, don't want the lost revenue going onto other customers, in the way of longer contracts, lowered handset subsidies :p
