I've currently got an Audi A3 Sportback, 1.9 tdi 105bhp (I think, its not quick anyway!) as a company car, its a 2007 reg with 40k on the clock. I only got it in October so it wasn't new to me, but over the past three months I've only managed to get 45mpg. My commute is about 20 miles, the first 4 or so are driving to the motorway, then about a mile through town at the other end.

My last tank was Shell fuel saver diesel and I got 50mpg. It could be a one off, but I'll try a few more tankfuls and see what I get.

I've got a BMW 320d Efficientdynamics on order coming in April so I'm hoping for better on that.

45mpg isn't that bad for a car of it's size and considering the warm up.
I had a passat with the same engine to get me to a 2 week course some time back. About 55miles of dual carriageway/city traffic and fast a and b roads, ie, what I'd call a good mixed journey.

I gave it some welly were I could and over the 2 weeks it returned 51/52 mpg which I thought was excellant.:T
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

My cars. I measure fuel consumption by the brim method at every fill up.

    Mazda2 1.3 86bhp petrol - mostly short (<10 miles) local journeys. Official combined = 54.3mpg. My experience 45 - 50mpg.

    Mazda6 2.2 163bhp diesel - mostly longer journeys. Official combined = 50.4. My experience 45 - 52mpg.

I think the difference is that most of the hire cars I drive are virtually brand new with tight engines - < 2,000 miles on average, and I drive them hard and fast (but allow turbos to idle).

That's a fair point, most long term reviews I've read indicate that max efficiency is only reached at somewhere between 20 to 25k miles, the passat I mentioned was into the 90's.

I do the same LA. Here's my stats - driving carefully:
    Honda FRV 2.2 140 bhp diesel (6 seater) - mixed journeys generally with 3 or more people in. Official combined = 44. I get 43 - 57mpg, averaging 50.4
If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try - oh bu99er that just cheat :D

I have VW Golf Bluemotion 1.6tdi 105bhp, alot of money to spend out but get approximately 700-50 miles out of tank which equates to about 65mpg, which is about 10 mpg less than the claimed combined mpg that VW publish, I've had as much as 80 odd mpg on a long run from Ayrshire to Milton Kenynes, and that was driving at normal speeds on motorway and the usual hold ups too.

But also as other posters have said, it depends mostly on driving style, Martin has a good article on driving styles and cost cutting etc.
Thanks to all the competition posters.
  • Im driving a VW Golf atm, with the PD engine, Diesel, with 6 speed g/box and I average around 54mpg over a full tank which is 600 miles. This includes town and motorway driving. On my daily commute to work, if traffic is good I tend to get 63mpg average over door-to-door, then around town at the w/ends its stop & start so that brings my tank average down.

The best ive had on a trip was 74mpg average which was door-to-door 35mile trip, incl stopping, starting etc. I also drove about 200miles to wales the other year and averaged 65mpg getting there.

I find its all about how you drive it. The car can cruise in 5th at 30mph, 1000rpm no problem, in 6th by 40mph, again about 1000rpm. Freewheeling upto junctions and reading the road ahead so you dont waste energy/fuel by braking all the time all helps.

As someone else said, its not just the mpg you need to worry about, its the overall yearly cost of the car - so you should factor in insurance, tax, servicing, tyres, depreciation in value of the car and work out a "pence per mile" cost. I did this a few year back and my golf worked out at 10p a mile or something like that - its probably gone up now prices have risen.

If i was you, id find the car your thinking of getting and look on the car forums for that car to see what mpg and costs drivers of that car are experiencing.
