When you set up mobile broadband it sets up a dial up connection and plugs in the GPRS APN settings for the operator so it can connect.

    Speculation..
The Orange software may have overridden the 3 settings but maybe couldn't connect because of signal problems.
The Three software didn't reset the settings so it can't connect.

I'd say you should be able to use system restore to get Three working again. Alternately finding and deleting the dial up connection after uninstalling the software should allow your chosen re-install to work OK.

With mobile dongles the setup produces the dial up connection and sets it up as I've mentioned above when the software is installed and those I've seen don't delete it on uninstall. The software (apart from drivers which don't seem to get uninstalled) isn't actually needed at all - you can connect manually from the dial up (for convenience create a desktop shortcut then right click select connect or double click) It is possible to just manually enter the correct APN settings in the dial up connection for the SIM being used. http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html which may be easier that going through reinstalls which clearly don't work in order to swap.

Sounds like it's time to return the Orange dongle then.

If you really do want to make it work try uninstalling the software, delete the dial up connection, and then reinstall. It may just be that it can't connect because you don't have enough signal though.
