Moving a gas meter?
I am buying a house which I will be refurbishing. As part of that refurbishment I would like to move the gas meter and the main gas pipe coming into the house. I realise this will have to be done by my supplier.
Does anyone have any experience of this? Initially I would base my decision on which supplier to go with on the reliability of service and cost of having this done.
If anyone has had any good or bad experiences and/or could give me an idea of cost it would be most helpful.
Thanks.

Hi Vincenzo,
I have no experience of doing this myself but I do work for an energy supplier (SSE). It's not your supplier who would move the meter/pipes, it's whoever owns the meter - this is usually marked on the meter as "property of...." In the case of gas meters it's usually Transco (or National Grid Transco as they are known these days I believe). I can't remember their number for meter moves off the top of my head (thank goodness!!! that would be TOO sad!) but I'll try to remember to have a look when I'm at work tomorrow.
There's no fixed cost for moving pipes/meter, they usually send someone out to give you a free quote as far as I know.

the meter operator (scottish power, central networks, united utilities, london electric) etc will usually move the meter 1 meter on the same wall for free through your supplier ie you have to arrange it through your supplier. any more than 1 meter or a different wall then you will have to pay a set price, call your supplier for more info
transco do the bits up to the meter0 -
Yeah Call the local gas people. Maybe try NATIONAL GRID on 0845 605 6677 they may point you in the right direction. It will Prob cost you a lot of money to do though.Filiss0

Thats it! That's the number we always give customers for gas meter moves.
dollarjon, I believe you can only get your meter moved free up to 1 metre if you're elderly or disabled and on benefits. I could be wrong though. Never heard of an energy company doing anything for free if they can get away with it! :rolleyes:0 -
I wanted my gas meter moving from my kitchen to an outside wall about 4 metres away, The quote was in excess of £1,000 so I left it under the sink.
Now, most of my bills are estimated or I have to supply the readings.

Thanks for all the posts everyone. I have done some digging and Scotia Networks deal with this sort of thing in my area. I am arranging a quote.
I hope it won't be as much as a grand!!! I have no choice about moving it, I am refurbishing a house and it will end up in front of the fridge in the kitchen, suspended about 2 metres in the air!0 -
It will most prob be over a grand as it sounds like it has to be moved a long wayFiliss0

That sounds good!. I have SGN coming out to quote me for a move of the meter over the next few weeks.
Vincenzo - how far are they moving the meter? Is it going outside?Whilst my posts do not constitute financial advice, I am always, without fail, 100% right!0 -
Yes - the meter was in the kitchen towards the back of the house and is now outside at the front of the house in a semi-concealed box, about 4-5metres away.
The distance you are moving it does not have that big a bearing on the cost. What really matters in where the gas line is in relation to where you want the new meter. Mine was essentially moved along the same gas line, just nearer to the source on the road. If I had wanted it to the side of the house it would have cost much more as this would involve more digging and new pipework.
Hope that helps!0
