Carpet fitted in wrong colour!

I ordered a carpet from a large chain, and even went to the trouble of taking in wallpaper and paint samples into the store to match it up.
I chose a "walnut" colour from a sample board, and ordered this. 3 weeks later it was fitted whilst I was at work.
When I returned, the carpet bore no resemblence to the one I had chosen, even though it said it on the packaging. I took an offcut back to the shop, and compared it against the sample. It was nothing like it. However, there was a roll of this carpet on display, and it was the same as what had been fitted.
I was unable to speak to a manager, but according to the carpet fitter, colour variations are common and there's little I can do as the roll was in the store to see, and the store says that the sample boards will change colour over time.

When I chose this colour, I compared it against the roll and the sample, and whilst there was some difference, it was just a shade, not a totally different colour. I can appreciate there will be shade differences but not actual colour. we are talking a mousey brown compared to a goldish colour.

Any ideas as to what I can do? Surely the store has a duty to show samples that are a realistic representation of what will be purchased? I didn't buy my carpet off the roll, it was a special order, so I expected what was on the sample board, or certainly something that bore a resemblance.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

When you chose the carpet did you take advice from anyone at the store as to what colour carpet you were going to get?

Who came to take the room measurements?

    Also dmg24 question is important.

As if no-one but you know the exact colour requirements how would they know they were fitting the wrong colour carpet.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

  • Something similar happened to me earlier this year but it was a small local shop. I was at home when the carpet was being fitted and commented to the fitter that it looked different to the one in the shop - he said they often do which I accepted - seeing small piece then floor size. However this was totally wrong, colour and quality.
Are there any "scraps" from the carpet fitter? I took a piece to the shop and compared it and eventually he admitted he had no idea how that one had been ordered. He offered me £100 to keep the carpet that was down and next time I wanted more carpet would get VIP treatment!!! ha!! I wanted the one I chose...took a month and even then had to chose an alternate shade as the one I wanted wasn't available. By that time I just accepted the new one - maybe gave up too easy as had furniture in room but couldn't unpack properly but was so sick by then just pleased there was something down!
    Good luck!

Whats the point of carpet samples if they dont match the carpet supplied?,Its the job of the retailer to check the carpet for colour match/quality not the customer.
Demand a replacement in the correct colour.

I do agree, but sometimes a sample can look different to a full carpet simply because of the size difference and the change in surroundings. I wonder if this is the issue?

And of course in different lighting it might appear to be a different colour, and pile direction has its own part to play.
But the op has compared the carpet sample to a offcut of her fitted carpet in the shop under the same lighting .
Its strange that the retailer has sample boards and roll stock that sort of matched at the time of order, but then at time of fitting the new roll stock no longer matchs?

Yes, in this case as they are supplied and fitted you would use the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982, which requires the store to provide goods that are "as sample". If there is a significant difference in colour between your sample and what was installed then you may be able to reject it outright - if it was a minor shade difference then you would likely be looking for a bit off the bill.

I'd recommend getting good pictures of the sample board/actual carpet offcut together before that sample disappears and getting your issue down in writing to the shop if they aren't willing to take action.

Most national carpet shops will no longer fit a carpet until you have seen the roll in your house and signed a paper to say it's the right colour.

Apparently scum from the Jeremy Kyle world were ordering and then getting it fitted and then lying and saying 'thats the wrong colour, but I'll keep it if you take 50% off the price".

Hence i'm surprised they fitted it without your approval.

  • This nearly happened to me. I ordered my carpet which I wasn't ready for straight away. They said they would send an order confirmation out but never did. I rang and rang the shop, called in, rang again and eventually the confirmation was sent.

The colours "name" sounded unfamiliar so went to the shop again to look at the display. They had noted down the wrong colour. Luckily for me and them because they knew I didn't need the carpet for a couple of months they hadn't actually progressed the order.

Moral of this story insist on paperwork!

Who let them in to fit the carpet if u were at work?
  • Thanks to everyone for the replies. :A
I hastily let the carpet fitter in, saw the roll in its wrapping with the correct details. I wasn't presented with anything to sign, and rushed off to work whilst my BF came to supervise.... (lesson learned there then...)

He didn't notice it looked different until it was laid, but we have since taken a large cut off down to the shop and it is completely different to that on the sample board. I have definitely been given what I ordered, in terms of what is on paper, but the product differs wildly from what is advertised on the sample board.

I will get to speak to the manager early next week. The salesman admitted the roll very different to the original sample, but I didn't buy off the roll and I would expect something similar to what I chose.

I'll make another post when I have some more info!
