Are we being double whammed on fuel prices?

As the fuel prices are just getting silly now (£1.27/litre near me for diesel), I was just wondering if we're getting stuffed by the fuel companies as well as the government?

Obviously, the most recent rise is down the the additional duty and the increased VAT but does anyone know whether the underlying fuel costs (ie, without the duty) is tracking the crude oil prices?

Has anyone seen any credible analysis of this to see if we are being double whammed?

I'd happily pay £1.27 for a litre of diesel.

Shell by me is selling it at £1.31 per litre

We're lucky to be able to use recycled chip fat at about £1.00 ish a litre. Smells but who cares.

Give it 10 years, and you'll be dreaming of the day you only paid £1.40 a litre.

When travelling up from Englandshire we always make sure we have enough to get beyond Aviemore so that I don't whinge all the rest of the way home. Last year due to the snow we had to stop & fill up to make sure but i only gave them £10

Put simply: YES we are being double whammied.
for a breakdown of the costs of the current average prices of fuel go here: http://www.petrolprices.com/price-of-petrol.html

You will notice the fuel duty is added on, then the VAT, so you are being charged VAT on the duty. Yep that's right.. TAXED on the TAX.
It's been like that for a long time though and no one has paid attention to it.
    Priceless eh?

It does show how much money the govt are raking in considering its close to 50p a litre in actual sale cost.

BP station near London Victoria was today selling standard Diesel at 136.9p/litre.

Petrol was much cheaper at only 133.9p
