  • If you have a direct debit set up for the minimum payment it will still take that as well.

Yes it will be taken out!
  • Phone them and ask them to make an adjustment to the DD if you don't want to pay another £100, they won't do it automatically.
  • I've paid a lump sum off once before and was able to suspend the direct debit for 1 month with the credit card company (Halifax). I'd give M&S a ring and see if they'll oblige!

Ok thank you, its ok if it comes out but I was just curious, I wonder why its that way though? I would have thought that as you paid some of the balance before the payment was due then they wouldnt take the dd amount

Ah well, thanks for your replies

Some CC companies work that way. With my Barclaycard, for example, if I make a manual payment (in good time!), the direct debit gets reduced by that amount.

My Santander, Silvercard, Vanquis CCs however all still collect the direct debit regardless of any manual payments...
My posts are my own opinions based on my experiences and info gathered from sites such as this.

It's a case of if your balance is not cleared off in full every month, the direct debit will still come out as instructed.
  • i normally pay (full amount) a week in advance of the minimum payment so my barclaycard very rarely still take the minimum payment

although my virgin CC (mbna) always take it even if a clear the balance immediately on receiving the statement, thus is go in to credit once cleared to zero, i then have to use the card to spend the credit and then re-pay the difference instantly to get my balance to zero

Have a look at one of your monthly CC statements and see what information it gives.

Vanquis now dont do this. If you make manual payments they now do reduce it from the DD amount which is now rather annoying as it was rather useful for reducing a balance but also useful if your having a tight month.
