boiler trouble

Hi,
I have a Saunier-Duval 400.40 boiler..apparently about ten years old. Tonight I find that it won't light up. It makes all the right noises but there's no flame. What I can't remember is whether there should be a contiunous flame for the pilot or not. I took the panel off and the pilot led seems to indicate a fault with it (the led is not lit). There is some kind of button underneath the thermostat controls which is like a plastic x-shaped rod in a plastic tube but pressing it doesn't seem to do anything (and it doesn't really seem to press more than a few mm and there's no kind of click). Does anyone know what might be wrong and what it might take to fix it? I don't have instant hot water so I know it's not a combi boiler..there is a hot water tank in the bathroom. If I were to have to replace the boiler, would it be better to get a combi and have the tank removed or get another system boiler and minimise the change needed?
TIA,
Chandy

worth checking the pilot jet is not blocked. get a very thin piece of wire to clean the hole out. this worked for me.0

Sounds like a good idea and easy enough if I can find where it is. Is it safe enough to remove the cover over where the flames usully are? I have the outer cover off, hence why I could see the LED's, but anything flamey is behind another screwed-on aluminium cover by the looks of it.
Thanks,

If you do take this off, make sure you disconnect the power and gas feeding the boiler first. Do you have boiler cover?0

Yeah, I thought I might have to do more than remove the fuse before I went further..thanks for the warning.
No, I don't have cover..as usual, seemed like a waste of money at the time (ahaha). If I get it fixed I might think again though!

Come on guys, act sensibly on this one.
There's no way you should be poking around in the gas works unless you thoroughly know what you are doing and have the necessary equipment to test the repair when you've finished.
I know it's a pain in the !!! trying to get a CORGI reg. engineer, particularly at this time of the year but that's what you need here.
Incidentally, a piece of wire is not the way to clean out a blocked pilot jet in most cases (check mfrs instructions).
Cheers

i knew someone sooner or later would say this. i have proper jet clearers but a piece of wire is perfect for the job. just because its a boiler dos not mean it rocket science. get a grip!0
