How do dual storage/convector heaters work?

We are considering moving into a rented property that has brand new storage/convector heaters which I'm concerned about as I've never used them before.

I've searched the forums and the consensus seems to be that whilst gas central heating is preferable, storage heaters can be relatively economical if used correctly. What I can't seem to find is how to use them correctly.

The house has a white electric meter which looks similar to our current economy 7 meter (in that there are 2 dials for the high and low rates) but I'm told the white meters are something special - don't know what this means.

How do you use these heaters without it costing a fortune:
- on days when we are going to be out all day
- on days when we are in during the day
- to dry clothes (we do not intend to own a tumble drier and don't have an outside washing line)

Any insight into the mysterious white meter also appreciated.

Other than these things the flat is considerable better than anything else we have seen, but if we go for it, I want to do so knowing the facts!

  • Is it in Scotland? White Meter used to be the Scottish term for Economy 7.

Different systems will vary slightly, but basically they are a normal storage heater (input-output dials) combined with a peak rate convector heater for evening top-up use when the stored heat runs out.

For drying clothes, use a dehumidifier.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
