The Legacy Outback has a capacity of 1800kgs - my trailer is 905kgs plus 1 horse adds 500kgs so is ok with 1 horse but maybe just over with 2 - plate weight is 2340kgs but is unlikely to ever be that heavy as only have a little arabian horse...

Simple answer is you could only carry one 500kg horse.

Two would put you 5.8% over weight without tack etc. Meaning a possible fine evry time you took it on a road.

As i understand it, and i may have misinterpreted it, it doesn't matter if the trailer only ever carries a tin of beans the fact that the plated weight is greater than the max tow weight for the vehicle means it is not a permisable combination, hence iwt offering the down plating service.

Yes, I was under the same impression maxheadroom. In fact I'm certain that this was the case, at least it was a couple of years ago.

  • You made me go and look it up (form tables in towing handbook fron HMSO published 2000)

For post 1997 licence holders who only have cat B then the trailer MAM greater than 750kg provided the trailer MAM does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle and maximum combined MAM is 3500kg

But for B+E and pre 1997 then this does not apply, so i stand corrected unless it has changed again since then

Useful pdf from DFT in July 2010 about trailers.

    http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roads/vehicles/vssafety/info_trailers.pdf

But that contradicts itself by omitting entitlements of cat b post 1997 drivers. The law here is mess, me thinks it was simpler before we harmonsied with europe - as an aside i note we didn't harmonise ridinge mopeds at 14 as in france

having said that i thing i would rather err on the side of caution rather than have the hassle of being pulled by VOSA

Yes, I'm one of those post 97 licence holders so the rules I was checking were only those applicable to me! I looked at vehicle/trailer combinations for ages to find a combination suitable for towing the great whacking horse I had while still being under 3,500kg MAM - I wanted a car that weighed 1751 kg and a trailer plated to as near to 1749kg as the car could tow..

Ooh never heard of downplating - have emailed Ifor Williams to ask about it - thank goodness I passed my test 30 years ago and am not prey to the new licence youngsters have to do in order to tow!

i work as a jag-landrover tech , i would not even think about getting a landrover as they spend to much time in the garage getting fixed .

Does that mean as a pre 1997 tested driver my car doesn't have to exceed plated weight on trailer? this is so confusing - I hope I have not been towing illegally :(
