Overlandlandy - that site doest seem to take into acout the plate weight of the trailer whic is what counts.
It aslo give the tow capacity of the forester as 2.05KG0 -
Only a few Legacys came with leather.
The reason I bought a Legacy was the only garage that would give me a decent trade for my WRX were Subaru, I had lookde at a Rover 75 diesel estate but the trade in price was a joke.
I still think Rovers are perfectly good and underated cars, but you can't seriously compare a brand new Subaru with a cheap to run old Rover.
If I was skint and needed wheels I would have no problems about driving a Rover, they are cheap because of blinkered viewpoints like yours, so I thank you on behalf of all those that need cheap wheels, with a nice revvy K Series engine.
Now try and not direct this thread in the way you have the other thread with your attacks on Rovers and anybody that doesn't slag them off simply because they think it makes them look or feel better.
Are Rovers good off road or do you just like talking about them?0 -

It will help narrow down the options as it factors in the trailer and horse weight. It will give you the vehicle options. In reality there are no really cheap 4x4 options that can also tow a fully laden medium horse trailer with!
You might want to 'challenge yourself' if you REALLY need the towing capacity all of the time OR if you sold your Shogun and Trailer could you save a load of £ (on fuel/insurance/servicing/depreciation etc...) and hire a Horse Box only when you need it? The likes of a new Equitrek Sonic 3.5T Horse box are fantastic and you can easily hire and drive one from the age of 17!
Wish I could afford the Equitrek (love em!), hiring is no solution for peace of mind in case of an emergency (like when my foal broke his leg) I have considered a car AND a box but what with tax, insurance MOT etc I don't think it would be economical so just need a newer car as mine is 15 years old and getting pretty clapped out! I am also checking out Horse & Hound and other equine sites but thanks for the pointer - determined to think this out as properly as I am able before parting with cash!:T Loving Money Saving Expert!0 -

Sorry to hear that, I hope bigjl doesn't try and sugget you could have put it in the back of a Rover 75 estate with a revvy K series engine.0 -
How often do you need the 4x4s capacity/ towing ability.
If its not that often how about getting newish supermini with low tax bracket/running costs and keeping Shogun just as a tow vehicle , yes i know tax and test would be fixed but v low mileage insurance policy can be pretty cheap esp if you can park it off road, don't bother with servicing it only sort safety/roadworthyness issues and run it till it dies (it pains me to say this). This would probably be less than a box and car.Edit and forgot to say less than new large vehicle cost and depreciation0 -

The Legacy Outback has a capacity of 1800kgs - my trailer is 905kgs plus 1 horse adds 500kgs so is ok with 1 horse but maybe just over with 2 - plate weight is 2340kgs but is unlikely to ever be that heavy as only have a little arabian horse... My Shogun is a bit underpowered towing as has a similar capacity..
I am impressed with peoples comments about Suburu anyway though still wondering about experiences with a Isuzu Trooper or Daihatsu Fourtrak which seem popluar on horsey sites:T Loving Money Saving Expert!0 -

As i understand it, and i may have misinterpreted it, it doesn't matter if the trailer only ever carries a tin of beans the fact that the plated weight is greater than the max tow weight for the vehicle means it is not a permisable combination, hence iwt offering the down plating service.0

Not strictly true.
You can tow a trailer with a tin of beans in and be under your weight limits. That would be ok, but then you couldn't pull it loaded so the towing vehicle would be no good in the OP's case.0
