  • Since you have a name, try looking on the much-maligned b4usearch website and see if it gives you any clues.

I agree. This website if free of charge and excellent value for money !

This is going to sound awful, but what about searching the back copies of your local newspaper in the deaths section? Sounds to me as though the house might be empty for an executor sale, although he may have had to go into a home. Another search which I don't have a clue how you would do it, is for probate being granted for a will in his name. All in all a note through the door is likely to be your best bet at first - certainly a lot easier. I have to say that I don't like the suggestion of a note atached to the outside of the door - might attract vandals or thieves, which I am sure the OP would not want to feel responsible for, or welcome if he/she is hoping to purchase it.

It is a valid assumption, but...

I drove past the house this morning and saw somebody outside at the house two doors away from the empty house.

I pulled over and rung the bell of the neighbouring house. Spoke to a very nice lady, who confirmed the name of the owner. The house has been empty for about 5 years. The owner is in his 60s and maybe living abroad.

I am going to speak to the council tomorrow and ask for help to get hold of him.

I will let you know how I am getting on.

  • After I spoke to the neighbours, I rung the council (twice) and left messages for them to ring me back.

They asked me for the property address and my full name and address. I shall chase them again on Monday...

I found another house which has been empty for as long as I remember. I have checked on the council website if anybody made any planning permission applications, and there are only a couple made to do with chopping down a few trees near by.

When I speak to them, I shall enquire about that property too.

    Fingers crossed....

the council cannot give you the name and address of anyone else - DP and all that stuff - they MAY agree to forward a letter

They are only so informative because they are holding information illegally. And their sources of info go way beyond the electoral roll which should not be published. I'm currently in contact with the Information Commissioner's Office because they are very interested that one of my family members is listed in the electoral roll section on the site. Strange thing is that person is not and never has been on the electoral roll. I believe the ICO are taking them to court over breaking the data protection act for putting lots of data on their site that they shouldn't be.

  • I just had a thought about retrieving the title register from the Land Registry website...would the owner of the house be able to find out that you did a search on the property?

If you are going to put a note throught he door then send one via the post office too - if the owner is having heir mail redirected or forwarded it will be included with that.

    Just covers another angle
