I can see by your threads you are all itching to get going :)

Chilli seeds can be sown now - they need a temperature of 21+C, so a heated propagator is good, but if you just chuck them in the airing cupboard, make sure you check them regularly and priick out the ones that have germinated.

Keep your eyes open for seed spuds on sale - don't just buy because they are there, gen up on the varieties you want. I'll be looking for Homebase to stock Charlotte and Sante. I'll need at least 60 of each, but if I come across a bargain different variety in the meantime, I know I won't be able to help myself (Spuds Anonymous :o).

Those with greenhouse space might want to try and get some Sweet peppers going early, not advised if you read the back of the packet, but they can be such moody plants, I reckon if you can bring them on in the warmth of your home on a south facing window/conservatory, it would be worth sowing a few now.

Basil can be sown all year, so get some going on your windowsill. A glut of leaves can be frozen, but it is always good to have fresh basil, when one pot is ripe for harvest, start the next pot off so you have a continuous supply.

Yep, I try to get my spuds in around St Patrick's Day (17th March), but now is the time to get the seed spuds from the shops and start chitting towards the end of Jan.
  • I can't wait to get going in the garden this year as we've cleared a load of space. Does anyone know if it's ok to plant onions and garlic now?

I am also interested in this as I was given some garlice to plant, although on the back of the packet it says to plant in Autumn. Perhaps now is too late?

Get the garlic in (as long as the ground isn't waterlogged or frozen), it's worth a try as it won't last till next autumn. Given we're now in winter I'd put them on a slightly raised mound to try to prevent them rotting off before Spring
  • I wanted to grow more veg this year. Last year was my 1st attempt. All my toms got blight and the bugs ate my salad leaves. I did manage to grow carrots tho, which were delicious! I was suprised how much nicer homegrown was to shop brought. I just need to hurry up and decide what to grow and find out when to plant it. :undecided

I'll deffo get some chillis and peppers in this week. I will be green fingered lol.
    Thanks for the advice Sally:beer:

You could follow what Carol Klien showed this week, plant the cloves into modules, leave under cover until sprouted and weather improves, then plant out

  • I can't wait to get started this year! Last year was my first attempt at growing fruit and veg and I did really well. I was really upset when I had to start buying from the supermarket again as I kept comparing it to my own and there was just no comparison! I also bought a 2nd hand greenhouse for £40, it's only 4x6 but I thought it was a bargain and fits into my garden perfectly:D My toms, cucumbers, peppers and chillies loved it in there.
Feb GC £80 per week (Well I'm gunna try:whistle:)
