Free Sky broadband

Just wondered if anyone has actually tried this, and if so, what they thought of it. NTL are going to sting me an extra £4 per month because I don't like direct debit, and I can't pay online, which is a bit bizarre considering that they are an internet company. So, methinks it's time for a change, which is a pity, when things were rolling along smoothly.
Nothing is really free, of course, but it seems a much better deal than I have.

I changed from wanadoo to sky broadband back in sept, and alas it truly is a tale of 2 cities.

I pay £10 a month for the max package, which is still almost £10 a month cheaper than wanadoo, when sky broadband works it works very well and its silly quick, however when it doesnt work, which is quite often, its mega-frustrating, and trying to get some technical help is pointless.

My migration was a nightmare too but I guess you pays your money and takes your choice, after all the net doesnt get much better than free does it?

    All the best

The free Sky offer is dependant on whether you are next to an unbundled exchange. You can check this at a site called samknows.co.uk.

Why not merely pester NTL and say you're gonna move provider unless they knock off the 4 quid charge - works for most.

I know a number of people that switched to skys broadband but have switched back again to other providers. For them the service was very erractic and surprise surprise customer service were very very difficult to reach. Might improve but I'd be wary at the moment.

Because they insist on using thier own version of the firmware for the Netgear DG834GT router that you have to use there is little scope to fix problems from a user end.

Most of the problems are down to a low SNR value and high sync speed. With the default firmware you can telnet into the router and change your SNR value to get a more stable connection... Without this Sky has to do it themselves and because of overwhelming demand and problems it takes them ages to get round and do this indavidually

How would you do this on a normal DG834G? Im not with sky but have the same router (slower wireless speed) and would be interested in being able to play around with this. Mine sometimes syncs too high and i get terrible SNR so would like to beable to cap it.

That's worth exploring. I know I'm probably being old-fashioned, and paranoid, but the fewer people that have access to my bank account, the better. There just seem to be so many things nowadays that must be paid via DD, but I suppose one answer might be to have a dedicated account. Hmmm.....
