Hiya looking for some suggestions please!
Company car is up for renewal in may been told i can spend in the region of 18000GBP, cannot be a convertible and must seat 4 ppl! Other than that i have a free hand. Now suggestions are welcome but also would i just look at cars that are new and worth that amount or do you reckon it should be a HP deal or what? I dont have to source the car just let the manager know what i want and he will get it:)
Cheers for any advice or suggestions ( and yes i know about tax issues etc !)
Cheers
Sal

  • Can you buy second hand? You will get something a lot nicer around a year old as it will be a £25k car new for example

Downside as you say will be the tax will still be based on new price

Some of the 1 and 3 series BMW's are very good on emmissions (petrol and the diesel versions) so could fall into that category providing you can buy second hand

It's an interesting idea. I once worked for a company that provided its salesmen with 12-18 month old BMW 3 series rather than new Cavaliers / Mondeos. The salesmen thought it was great and the company saved loads in depreciation.

  • Depends on how your scheme work, my last companies scheme involved giving you a long list of cars and their "values" and you had to pick one off the list.

The last company car I went for was a golf tdi. Rediculously good mpg (60+ mpg on long trips), seated 4 comfortably, lovely to drive. But I think the list on that was 22k?

I would go for a 1979 Fiat Strada in Blue, the 75hp model gives a good mix of dodgy trim, breakdowns and snail like performance.

If you go here http://www.comcar.co.uk/newcar/companycar/taxcalc/g1select.cfm you can check the tax liability. The amount can vary considerably for the same value cars because of the emissions figures.

If you can get a 1 yr old car you can get some good motors. The BMW 3 series is a good shout, VW Golf. Might be worth looking at the New Accord and Mazda 6.

Failing those, that Fiat mentioned above sounds like a DREAM motor...

Yep we've done it for years and it works great. Downside as I said is the increased tax for staff due to increased list price
