First disconnect from internet. Start internet explorer. Go to tools, internet options, make sure start page is "use blank", then delete history, empty temporary internet files. From desktop go to start: Control Panel; Network and internet; Network Connections; Right click Local Area Connection. Highight internet protocol, click Properties. Check that Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS automatically both selected. Go to control panel, addremove programs, look for anything you did not install (careful!) and uninstall. Reboot. Connect to net. Any good?

Follow ExactInternet's suggestion first. I don't want to conflict.

  • It won't be ruined, sometimes they're just a pain to get into safe mode because you need to get the timing right!

Try Plan B.. With the computer booted up as normal:
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type "msconfig" (without quotes). Press OK.
    • On the "boot.ini" tab there are a series of tickboxes - one of which says /SAFEBOOT. This should then activate a set of radio boxes to the right, one of which says network. Select this option.
    • Click ok. You should be prompted to restart your computer.
    • Follow my steps from the post above.

Once Malwarebytes has finished scanning, but before you let it reboot your computer, you need to undo these steps or computer will not boot into "normal" mode:
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type "msconfig" (without quotes). Press OK.
    • On the "boot.ini" tab untick the box for which says /SAFEBOOT.
    • Click ok. You should be prompted to restart your computer.

Any problems and we'll try Plan C :)
  • Hi thanks. It won't let me even do that. Keep having a pop up window saying application cannot be executed!

  • The only option we have then is to try and get it into safe mode once the computer has been restarted.

Shut down again, then flick the power on. As soon as the boot screen (computer manufacturer/motherboard manufacturer logo) disappears, keep hitting the F8 key.. Don't just do it once, do it in quick succession until you get the safe mode menu. Failing that, once you've turned the power back on, don't wait, just hit the F8 key repeatedly from the get go. On some motherboards this will take you to a configuration page that we don't want, but they tend to be in the minority!

If you get to the Windows XP screen with the green bars going across, it's gone too far :)
  • I got as far as the safe mode part & when I try to click on my name to log on the arrow won't move at all. Tried twice now! It's nit my day today. Thanks for your help tonight. It's really appreciated.

If you are still having troubles, attach it to another pc internally or via usb hd caddy, and clean it up with malwarebytes

    Which antivirus solution was installed
