  • For me

1: Parsnips. They sit there all year then you pull massive plants out of the ground come November. My thanksgiving (live with a Pennsylvanian) parsnip was maybe 6" diameter with a slow taper to 14" or so. A beautiful beast tender all the way through and when chipped, boiled til just before they fall apart and then roasted in honey and oil for 20 mins sublime.

    2. Courgette. Ask me in august and I hate courgettes. Their stupid little names and annoying insistance on filling my car seat every other day with fruit. However right about now I could go for some and all I have is a courgette pickle to bulk out stews. The supermarket price is laughable for something any grower WANTS you to have come the summer.

    3. Dwarf French Bean. Each plant can give at least 2 crops a year, they take up no room and are versatile. I tend to eat young the first crop lightly steamed then let the second crop mature for beans to add to my mixed baked beans.

    4. Patty Pan Squash. Odd fruit, a conversation starter and an evil summer double team with courgette. However if allowed to mature the fruit stores well. I still have one or two fruit that are good now.

    5. Mange Tout. I disagree with the OP who said they fill a plate better. They don't reach my plate! No washing, no cooking just picked straight from the vine. So sweet and delicious just wish the local pigeons didn't agree so vigorously!
