Advice Needed, broadband, tv & phone

Think thati may have put this in the wrong area before as it is more b/b orientated!

Hi all, I was wondering of some of the shrewd moneysavers may be able to help me.

I have just moved into a new flat (converted shop 1st floor) and am looking for a good tv, and broadband service, there is and has never been a phone line installed.

Originally I had arranged the VM cable service, however after 4 failed install visits they decided that i was "unserviceable" as they needed to do a 400m re-pull and that was not financially viable.- This was really really annoying after 2 months of waiting! especially as I had got a "mates rates" deal.

I'm pretty sure I will be taking sky's hd+ tv packages- simply cant get what I want elsewhere (ie discovery channel!) however i'm stuck on the broadband.

Sky offered a £10 install for a new line if I took phone and b/b but they only offer an 8mb b/b service which is limited to 40gb from my exchange- this is easily used up with my family's download habits.

BT offered free phone install up to 10m/b b/b but again a 40gb limit, talk talk wanted 49.99 for the line but the b/b was unlimited and was £1 per month cheaper than sky's package- however i have seen lots and lots and lots of complaints about talk talk and am very wary (salesman on the phone was really really pushy as well).

i'd like free (or cheap) install of the line and decent reliable unlimited b/b- I know I wont get over "10mb" and just have to live with it.

Basically i'm after a little advice-

Many thanks

Rob

The Sky broadband on offer is their Sky Connect - a resold BTw product which isn't up to much.

Your first step should be a visit to http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php to see if there are any LLU operators in your exchange. It's pretty much certain that Sky aren't but Be/O2 may be and they are both pretty good.

You can take a BT phone line and use somebody else's broadband but I don't think that would be a free install. There are unlimited BT packages and both Plusnet and the Post Office offer line installs but I don't know if you can get it free.
  • Unfortunately no other providers for my exchange yet.

So only a re-sold bt product is possible for me.

I'm not up to speed on the current state of play with BTw only exchanges having had LLU options in the past and now on cable.

From what I've seen posted by others who have kept up with the ADSL market Plusnet may be worth looking at as I'm pretty sure they can offer lines and have a number of different download volume options. IMO you should look on BT as a supplier of last resort - they were rubbish when I was keeping track and I've not seen anything to suggest they've improved unless you can get their Infinity product which just may be a good one.
