Barbados in August - Mosquitoes?

Looking at booking a holiday in Barbados at the end of August. Does anyone know how likely it is that there will be lots of mosquitoes? My husband seems to send some sort of radar out to them and I'm sure it would put him off taking the trip if it was very likely he'd get bitten a lot!

We went to Barbados in August and whilst there were mosquitoes it wasn't really a problem if you used repellent spray. It was no worse than we have had on Majorca.

My son is a mosquito magnet too and I have found aloe vera can help.

Lived & worked there for a year, The little baskets tortured me all the time.

I was advised by local people to use citronella oil and that worked if used every evening and any time i was working near that lake near Garrison Savannah
Be good to the young on their way up you might need them on your way down.
  • August is not the ideal time to holiday in Barbados. The weather is too humid and has the potential for hurricanes/tropical storms.

You will enjoy it much better between January and April.

I second August as an undesirable time to go. Try as travellerboy suggests or after the hurricane season in November onwards.
  • The cost of a half-way decent hotel in Barbados in ridiculously expensive. The Island Inn (which gets good reviews) is a dump and will cost £3500- £4000 for a two week holiday for 2 in the off peak season ie August.

The better choice is to pick a Premier Cruise holiday like (Holland America, Celebrity or Royal Caribbean) for a two week cruise around the southern Caribbean. You will be treated like VIP's and you will pay under £1800 pp.

Cruises are normal November to May in the Caribbean avoiding the troublesome summer months.
  • Our holiday dates cannot be changed - any suggestions on where to go that time of year if Barbados is not ideal in August - we have £3500 to spend have two weeks and a 10 year old son. We would like sea, sand, pool and somewhere to venture out to a few days. Don't want to be suck on a complex the whole time and my husband and son do not want to go on a cruise. Thanks.

We stayed at the Silver Sands Christ Church which I really liked but is getting mixed reviews now on Trip advisor. We went room only but had a room with two bathrooms, a living area where the boys slept and a kitchenette. There were three nice places to eat within walking distance of the hotel and the beach in front of the hotel was really nice and quiet. You would need to hire a car to see more of the island though.

Some of the west coast is very built up and the beaches were crowded all the time.

We went in August and it was great weather wise the storms miss Barbados in general. The sea breezes kept the temperatures to a ok level.

Compared to other Caribbean islands it's fine in August. Look at temperature and rainfall charts to see what I mean.
