Santander failed direct debit collection

Hi, read on here for a long time but first post
I transferred my bank account recently (Nationwide to Halifax) and transferred all my direct debits. My DD to pay my Debenhams (Santander) card failed though and Santander said that I had no DD set up. I've previously had one set up for approx the last 3yrs. Halifax said not their fault as all they can do is write to the companies letting them know the customer wishes to change the DD. Santander though are claiming it's not their fault either.
Can I claim back the late payment fee and interest? (£12 fee + £22.58 interest on the balance)? I paid the whole lot off over the phone so not incurring any more interest. If so do I claim it from Santander? And will this have a knock on effect for my credit rating (previously perfect)??
Thanks for any help!

When you have DDs transferred from one bank to the other the procedure is as follows
-Halifax will write to all direct debit companies and they must respond in 10 working days (up to companies to update system).
-Nationwide will cancel all DDs in the mean time
Santander seems to have failed to update their system at all or in time hence the late payment charge. Regarding claiming back the fee you need to speak to Santander and it will register as a late payment on your file. If this is your first time it should be ok.0 -

It's almost certainly Santander's fault. Their card services division has a long history of setting up DD mandates which then vanish without a trace. See here:

I would ring them back.0
