Too Many Processes On Start Up (PC)

Options
Hello all,

Hoping someone could advise what steps I can take to help the PC boot up a lot quicker than it does at present. I think the main problem stems from the i-tunes programmes associated with the son's i-pod touch and I have removed these now. I still think there are too many other programmes trying to kick in on start up and need some advice on which ones can be safely removed and how to go about it!

Grateful for any help.

:)

If you are using Windows from XP onwards then you can go to Start, Run, type MSCONFIG and click OK.

Under the Startup Tab you will see most of the applcations that run when Windows starts up but, and I can't stress this enough BE CAREFUL what you remove. If possible post the list here and we can take a look and advice you of what is and isn't safe to remove.

Basically leave anything that says 'microsoft' alone unless its something you recognise and know to be a 'nuisance' rather than 'important' (eg MSN Messenger)

If you're feeling brave you could give the services tab a trim too

    Good advice.

Also, if you're running Windows XP, you'll almost certainly have ctfmon running. It's useful if you work in Asian (R-L) languages I think, but otherwise turn it off via the Languages settings in Control Panel (untick Advanced Text I think from memory).

Also, install ScottyPatrol - tiny app, with minimal memory footprint, it tells you whenever a program tries to add itself to the start up list so you can block it.

There is an app called Soluto that helps speed up both startup and shutdown, allowing you the freedom to choose which apps run in bootup. It speeded up my bootup from a staggering 5 Minutes, down to just over 1 minute.

It's easy to do this with ccleaner. Just go tools/startup and you can then disable or delete items. If you just disable stuff it's simply as easy to enable again. Google anything you aren't sure about.

I'd jost like to thank the poster above for his reply. Tried as best I could to follow the instructions and the PC appears to be running much faster. :T
