Wedding fund raising.

Hi Guys,

Just a quick query.

I may at last have set a date for my wedding (August 2012) - don't ask about the "may" its a long story. :)

So I am now seriously looking at ways to raise some extra cash towards everything, though we are very fortunate in that we will be getting some help from our parents.

I am also finally moving in properly with the other half - so now need to clear my house out. I am, therefore wondering if its worth trying to sell some bits and bobs and if so where. As well as furniture and all the usual gadgets etc i have a rather large collection of clothes collected over many years (honest). Was thinking of sticking the clothes on ebay but not sure if there is a market anymore.

But on a more general note, it would be really interesting to get an idea how people are raising money towards their weddings.

Thanks

  • Hi Hadley1! Haven't heard from you in a bit, hope you had a good Christmas and New Year :)

I'm also in the process of working out what money I can get together (also likely to be August 2012, possibly early September). As a student with a part time job, it's not going to be easy. My H2B works full time and covers most of the bills with me making a small contribution, and he also has debts which he really wants to clear ASAP. So we've decided that I am the wedding fund saver! I would really like to save £7-£8k in the next 20 months by saving every penny I can (all non-essentials are out :o), selling loads of stuff on ebay (yes, there is still a market, but don't expect to get lots of money) and other places such as preloved, gumtree and possibly even a carboot sale. I moved out ages ago but still have quite a bit of clutter at my parents' house which I want to get rid of - I've decided that if it's still there it means I don't need it! I'm also going to do some mystery shopping assignments. Both sets of parents have kindly offered money, but I want to take as little off them as possible as I would personally rather have help towards buying our first home than money to spend on one day and a holiday!

Need to research good savings accounts to put it all in too :D

I'm interested in this too. H2b and i are trying to gather (and not spend!) as much cash as possible for both our wedding in June, and to move house next year (we're in negative equity :()

I've got rather a lot of bits and pieces from a previous relationship stashed away at a relatives house, so i'm trying to gather the motivation to get on and sort through it all and either ebay it, or boot fair it. I can't think of anywhere else i could sell it to be honest.

I also (when i have the time) knit and sew. So, I thought i might put a few feeler things out on ebay to sell, such as hand knitted ipod socks, and pretty oil cloth bags, and little parcels of a hand knitted bear and pair of booties for new babies. It would be nice to get a little bit of a profit from that.

H2B is already working all the extra hours he can for more cash, unfortunately i don't get paid extra for working longer hours, so i can't do that to help.

I think there are quite a few pages in these forums on earning extra money i intend to look at.

I'm a bit of a crafter myself, and have learnt how to make fabric flowers. So I might make things like ribbon chokers and bracelets with flowers sewn on, and see how they go.

Lovely! I'm making loads of felt and button flowers for my wedding flwoers, if i'm not bored to tears of those by June, then I might try to sell those too!

Hey, I went ebay mad a bit last year and raised a few hundred for my wedding fund. I just gathered everything together one day and put it all on there, was easy.
Now Ive ran out of things!
I get paid every 2 weeks, so I just plan to buy something every 2 weeks. Next tuesday Im giving my bridesmaid the money for the hen party, whoop!

If you are creative, I would say etsy.com is a brilliant website to sell things on, or get ideas on something you make and sell.

OH is working lots of overtime at the moment to bump up the wedding fund. This isn't an option for me so I'm planning a car boot sale in the spring to get rid of a load of bits and pieces that we never use. We're also putting all money from cashback sites and surveys into the wedding pot too.

    Thanks everyone.

    Such great ideas!

It does look ebay is an initial way forward for me. Guess I may not make much, but guess it all helps. And guess if my house is cleared out we can then make the decision as to what to do with it.

Unfortunately neither myself or H2B can get paid for extra hours at work (though we both seem to be doing more and more of them):(

Then I guess might look at doing something crafty, but not sure how good anything will turn out still should think positive.

Other than that it is the good old ones like stopping spending on unnecessary bits and bobs and collecting all my small change etc.

Any other ideas anyone has would be brilliant and if i have any brian waves I'll let you know.

    Thanks again.

We sold stuff we didn't need.

I wanted extra stuff for our wedding so we took in a roommate for a few months. He's a great guy we love him! It helps that we're in London and there is a large demand, I don't know if this would work for everyone.

We're cutting back and saving. Any house repairs will have to wait. For this reason we have non-working heating in the bedroom and a broken dishwasher which can wait til after September to sort.

Also taking the bus instead of running 2 cars or the train, trying to keep shopping spends down, OH is cutting back on the number of new DVDs he buys. Plus, he got a tax rebate so that's money towards his outfit and a small emergency fund in case we go over budget. Which we may well do as MOH does not fit into her bloomin bridesmaid's dress anymore.
