Not sure how you are getting there but if it's Easyjet use their buses to get to town. They are called Terrorvision and are decent and cheap.

Walking is probably the best way to get around Rome. It's not actually that big, well the main area anyway.

Buses are also a good way to get around the city, one of the easiest is the red tour bus (you can pick up an all day ticket from the Termini) it allows you to get off and on all day wherever you like on its route which goes past most of the main attractions.

There are other buses which again you can get an all day pass for from Termini. Each bus stop has an electric sign on it indicating which numbers will stop.

We stayed near Termini at the Best Western Canada and it was a really good hotel for the price. Rooms were clean and the service was excellent. The only thing about Termini hotels is that they are slightly out of the way of the main tourist spots. You may get sick of walking to Termini each day and on a night to get a 10 minute bus to the main bars / restaurants.

Fancy a trip to the beach? Hop on the train at Travestere and have a look out to Santa Marinella (spelling?).

One tip you may be able to use is that if you go through the Roman Forum you can access the Colosseum from the back which allows you to bypass the massive queues they have at the front.
  • I went there a few years back and loved it. Walked all over the centre of Rome during my time there and saw everything I wanted to. The walk from Rome to the vatican may anoy kids, but for me & my other half it wasnt a problem.

We went in November time and the weather was a bit grim. Also, if you want to see the vatican museem, get there early as there are massive queues.

As always, you`ll get all the dodgy looking people trying to flog you fake handbags and umbrellas etc.. but they tend to appear in every country you visit these days.

I really enjoyed Rome, we didnt bother with any tours, just bought ourselves a book and set off walking. Drink and food is a bit more expensive than over here, but if you find a nice restaurant and drink house wine, you can get some bargains.

Hotel wise, we booked a fairly cheap 3 star place near the train station. Area wasnt brilliant, but fine for us as we only slept there and had breakfast there.

With mystery or secret hotels, there isnt really anyway of checking them out before hand. Ive had one before in London and whilst it said it was in the "square mile" and was a "four star", it was miles from where I wanted to be and was probably the worse 4 star hotel ive ever stayed in! Guess its pot luck!

brilliant thank you everyone, you are all so very helpful.

I'll just bribe the kids with pizza and ice-creams on long walks this will keep them very happy lol,
I didn't even think they would do bus type tours(just didn't occur to me!) will definitely do that. I like the idea of just getting a book and walking about, so I'm going to get a book to go with the tickets, just had a look at the rome with kids book going to get that plus a more adult touristy one,if anyone has any recommendations?
Will definitely check out trip advisor too.
We will be there for 4 days, flying BA. I think I will keep an eye out for any deals for visits and if not just book when we get there,as I still have a while to plan this all out.
    Many thanks again everyone

Oh and ignore the porky pies you get told outside the Collesium - usual stuff like 'there aren't any tickets left today but I can get you in in my tour'. Total rubbish.
