Rome Italy

Hi everyone,:D

Hope everyone is good on this lovely morning?

I am hoping to take my family(2 adults, 2 kids, aged 8 and 5) to Rome for my hubbies 30th in October, have looked on lastminute and found a top secret hotel, but cannot find this on google,is there another way of finding out where it is? the hotel write up is,
This modern hotel offers comfortable facilities for business and leisure travellers such as a swimming pool, meeting rooms and a restaurant. All the rooms are equipped with a mini-bar, air conditioning and a safe.

Also does anyone know if it is easy to get around Rome? walking and buses. Or would hiring a car be better?

Any other advice you can give would gratefully be received. :A

Many thanks

    hey!

I love Rome - been twice!! For me, i loved staying in a hotel called Domus Praetoria - look it up! its quite cheap and well looked after. The road its down is right by the Termini (main railway station). The area isnt as nice as some in Rome but i will always go back there. Its run by 3 brothers. brekkie is included :)

getting around rome is fine with the metro, trams and walking. i personally prefer to do lots of walking there. i dont think id hire a car just because i found the standard of driving a bit mad to put it lightly!

Thanks for that,I will check out that hotel,I prefer walking but the kids don't lol.
Do you know if it is easy to find places to eat with children? I've heard Italy is not very child friendly.

No, its the opposite, the Italians LOVE children and always make a fuss of them.

I found Rome really expensive to eat and to feed children. I was however on a budget and not on a celebration trip like yourself. I did make a note on cheaper places to eat from another forum but we were never in the right place at the right time and when the children are tired and hungry they need to eat 'now'.

There are plenty of buses and trams to catch. If you go to the information desk at Termini rail station (its a track on the far right of the station) you can can buy special transport passes that include two attraction entrances, though I think I read somewhere that pass may have changed a bit recently.

If you don't get the answers you require here I would ask on the Trip Advisor forums.

Enjoy your trip. Can't remember how long you are going for but my children loved Florence and its really easy to walk around and much, much smaller than Rome. For Rome think large city like London. Probably the wrong comparison but its larger than you think.

Just remembered there is a book you can buy online called Rome with Kids.
  • We stayed in a hotel called ArrunBlue which was described as being 20 mins from the centre of Rome.......20 mins in a 60euro taxi - each way!

It was 1 hour 30 mins away on a bus and 3 trains - each way again.

We did an open top bus tour which was good, we also did the colluseaum tour which I would defo recommend. We did it with a tour guide rather than with the earphones. Really worth the money. We did get caught out with the roman soldiers outside it though who offered to take our picture then tried to charge us 20euro for the pleasure lol. I gave them 5.

The cafe right across the road, just as you come out the underground, is soooooo expensive. Avoid this at all costs.

On our last day our flight wasn't leaving till 8pm so we took advantage of the luggage park within the vatican. We left our case here then went about our day before picking it up again at home time.

    Hiya again!

We have done both, ie, booked before we left and while there!

    Experience is:
Collosseum we managed to get a specail deal there outside the colossuem of €20 each to get in with a half day tour of the colosseum and the surrounding area - it was valentines day thou so think it was a special offer but was excellent value for money.

We booked with viatour to see the vatican and st peters basilica before we left and kind of got ripped off with our hands tied! we paid £120 each for the tour and entrance to the basilica but what they dont tell you is they want a further €20 each on the day for your entrance to the vatican and the museums.....apparently it was in the small print! worked out pricey to be honest althou it was ok. tour was moving very quickly and u dont get a minute to just take in what your seeing.....

    When we went last year,
Fantastic hotel close to the Vatican

was NH Leonardo Da Vinci. One thing, our booking was lost so perhaps phone in advance to check that they have it, I doubt this happens often and was quickly resolved.

We did the bus tour and spent ages walking around the city it's beautiful.

Ahh Rome! Home of pizzas and gelatos - how could it not be child friendly?

If the kids hate walking, I would go for the open top bus tours. Great value if you are only in Rome for a few days. The approach to the Vatican is jaw-dropping.
